Hi Guys,

After much debate with myself and nudging from everyone here, I finally bit the bullet and purchsed my first AI! Now im faced with the decisions of choosing an optic reticle. Ive decided to go with a NightForce, most likely the new ATACR, but cant figure out what reticle to get. I currently use a NF NXS 5.5-22X50 with a Mil-Dot reticle and .25 MOA turrets on my work rifle. This is pretty much what I was trained on and what I know.

After reading many many articles on the Mil/Mil, MOA/MOA matching, I'd like to try this route, but because I use both, Im really stuck!!!

Im leaning towards the mil/mil because im familiar with the ranging and such with my current reticle, but im not sure if I understand how to use the mil turrets. For those of you who have used the mil turrets or have switched from a mix like I am currently using, was the adjustment pretty simple? Im definitely not the math wizard so im looking for ease of transition.

Also, some reccomendations on scope mounts would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

CJ

I have gone from MIL + MOA to MIL + MIL

Really it comes down to differant values, I find the MIL adjustments faster and less prone to mistake. When your dialing 20.75 MOA Vs 2.6 MIL its less to keep track of or dick up.

The real value comes in that you can adjust what you see (with FFP or SFP at cal mag)

I am a huge fan of making them match

I really like the mil/mil myself and you can get a moa to mil conversion chart from impact data and it will help you with the transition... I am a huge night force fan also and I just got the ATACR with the MIL-R reticle and if you plan on doing much ranging in the field with your reticle you owe it to yourself to check it out, I have been impressed with it so far.
My .02 :)

Well the ATACR only comes in Mil/Mil with MIL-R reticle or MOA/MOA with MOAR reticle unlike your 5.5-22 which has a mixed system. So your choice is not what reticle so much as it is what system. It would be hard to go wrong with the MIL system and you seem to be leaning that way anyway. If resale is an issue, the MIL based optics seem to be the most desired by far from my analysis of the "Optics for Sale" section. Personally, I have ordered an ATACR with MIL-R and am going to mount it in the new 6 screw NF rings.

Thanks guys for your suggestions! Im definitely going with a matched system and again, im pretty sure it'll be mil/mil. Just want to make sure im making the right decision before dumping 2K into the optic! Have a great weekend!

Aren't MOA more precise? I say this because on a .1 mil turret one click equals .36 of an inch @ 100yards and with MOA a click equals roughly .25 of an inch. so wouldn't fine tuning be better with MOA? Im asking because Im in the same boat as the OP.

Sure MOA offers finer adjustment. But can you use it? At 1000 yds, one click of each scope will give you 3.6" and 2.6" (not 2.5") of movement respectively. Can you, your rifle and your load make valid use of the 1" difference in adjustment precision when you will be lucky to be grouping around 10-12" on a good day ?

Exactly.....even at shorter ranges the finer adjustment is pretty much moot.

True. I was just thinking of a time when maybe that perfect zero is 3/4" above the bull and bringing it down to get an exact zero could be better with moa. I realize this is splitting hairs because a lot of rifles/shooters aren't even capable of that kind of accuracy. I just thought that the .11" difference per click was worth bringing up.

When target shooting N.F. found it best to make their BR scopes ( which I use in 8-32x56 ) with 1/8moa clicks. That with the NP-R1 reticle and a unique ring / base set up makes for a real precision system in close or ELR. The BR models may not be able to hold up as well to rugged combat conditions as some of the other offerings. But for about 1/2 the $ it may be worth a look for precision target shooting given the fine 1/8 moa adjustment available....If I had the $ to buy a new scope right now it would most likely be the ATACR....I REALLY like that one.
