I'm sending my MOA NP-R1 back to get switched over to a MIL/MIL system.
This is my only scope that's not MIL based and I would like to get them all the same. I would swap someone if they have a mil scope as well.
What reticle do most of you guys prefer in the NF?
The standard Mil Dot or the MLR?

Thanks

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

This comes down to personal preference. If you have used mil-dot and like it then get it. I prefer hash marks, I really like my NP-R1. You might do better selling your current scope here and just buying a new one with the reticle you want.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

It might be personal preference, but the MLR with it's 1/2 and 1/4 mil hash marks will be a much better reticle for the tactical role. Milling to judge distance is much harder without the half-mil hash marks. I have used both extensively, and I always prefer the MLR. If money is of no concern, then take a look into the Horus reticles.

This is what I got, and I couldn't be happier. I'm not a fan of dots though.

Some pics I have.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

I'll throw out another vote for the MLR. I have a Weaver mil dot and a F1 with MLR. For hunting use the mil dot is quick and easy, but for target shots The MLR is much more informative.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

I had the Mildot and that was a mistake. I think NF offer a super MD product but I'm not in need of a tactical reticle and makimg fine adjustments with the Mildot is extremely hard and requires a lot of practice. I think reticles have moved on considerably since Mildot was invented and I don't see a need for it for most shooters. NF do make one of the best out there but unless you have a real tactical requirement it shouldn't be on the agenda IMO.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

I like the MLR. I would prefer the vertical and horizontal posts to be solid as opposed to see though "ghost" posts. I think the combination would be a winner. I am surethe ghost post has it's fans though. Still, given my choice of NF reticles I like the MLR hands down.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

Glad I saw this thread, going to be ordering a NF from CS Tactical in a few months maybe sooner and I was going to go with the MD now I am going to go with the MLR for sure.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

Thanks Guys

MLR it is.

I just decided to sell my MOA NP-R1 on here as it was going to be too expensive to send it back to get converted to MIL.
I do love the NP-R1 reticule, but want to get everything the same and I have more MIL scopes than MOA's.

I do wish they made a NP-R1 reticule in MIL though, that would be real nice Clark.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

I have a SFP MLR and like it, primarily because it seems more precise to me for determining range.

I'm curious as to why one would suggest that the mil-dot would be a better choice in a FFP optic?

I will say that I sometimes wish that the outer posts were solid, rather than open. The solid lines would draw my eye to the center more easily I believe.

Any idea why Nightforce goes this route? I know the posts can be used in ranging, but I never use them for this and rely on the hash marks instead.

Just curious how you guys use them if at all.

Greg

I have not used the MLR NF FFP but I have been told that the MLR reticle disappears on lower power. Call Mike @ CST he will explain it much better than I can.

I have to admit Mike that's not my picture. But here's one from me and my son hunting last weekend. With a cell phone non the less.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

I have standard Mil Dots on mine.

Dont mind em... MLR would be nice too.

I wonder If MLR would have any disadvantage in lower light conditions as the reticle is a little thin...

Why would anybody ever want a less precise reticle? What is the distinct advantage that the mildot reticle gives if it is in a FFP scope?

You missed it the first time.

The retical is thin, when the reticle shrinks at a lower power it disappears.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

Very interesting. My MLR is FFP and I power down to shoot movers. I have never had that problem. I admit though, I never have to power down all the way. I'll have to give it a try sometime.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

Let me rephrase I’m not saying you can’t use a MLR NF FFP at the lower powers. I’m saying it’s harder to use at lower powers when trying to use it through dense brush or other obstacles. Where the Mildots have a tendency to be more apparent do to their size. Make more since now? If it makes people feel better I'm saving for a NF MLR FFP.

+2. This is what I've done.

Re: Night Force Reticle Mil Dot or MLR

The last thing that I heard was that you can now order NF scopes with Horus reticles. It was for a ridiculous price though if I remember correctly.
