Is there any reason to even consider an 8 - 32, or is the 12 - 42 a no brainer.

For those guys who have these, are you able to use your scope on max 42 power or do you find that you turn the power down during a match. Does that much magnification ever cause problems, or are you that stable. Ive never worked with a scope with that much magnification.

I currently have a 5-22 nxs that I will keep for general shooting. This new scope would be for F class only.

Matt,

Most folks in F-Class tend towards the 12-42, although there are plenty with the 8-32 as well. Most will run their scopes at 42x for as long as they can, only turning the magnification down if/when mirage becomes a problem as the day heats up.

Where the extra magnification comes in most handy is on the first yard line or two in the day, where mirage is minimal. At this point, with the zoom maxed out, you can make *very* precise holds; (which leg of the printed "X" you want to hold on at 800 or 1000 yards, etc.).

About the only reason I could think of to go with the 8-32 vs. the 12-42 would be if you were running a "heavy" .308 load (200 grains +) that would require extra elevation to reach 1000 yards or beyond (out to 1200-ish). There, the extra internal elevation adjustment available in the 8-32 would be nice to have.

While I have shot an F-Class match with a 5.5-22x with no problems at all, given the preference, I'd take more magnification than less! You'll find that regardless of which version of F-Class you shoot (bipod or Open class) your position will be stable enough to warrant the extra zoom.

I have both 8-32 and 2-42 NSX that I use for F-Class. I generally run them in the 30 - 32 X range. But when the mirage runs high - and it does here in the desert from time to time - in the summer, it ends up down in the 15X range regardless.

I run an 8-32BR. Often by the 3rd match of the day I will have to turn it back to 28 or so.

I very rarely turn it down from 42x as well. Easily 95+% of my shots are at 42x.

It's always good to have more magnification than you may need than to not have it.

currently i use a npr 1 reticle on my 22 and 15 power scopes. I see this np2 dd has 1.1 moa from the dot to the tip of the lines. do you measure your shots with the reticle or by the size of the scoring rings.

it looksw like some people hold, ive always dialed for corrections and am just trying to get my brain around this.

I use an NP2-DD and really can't imagine using anything else at this point. The idea of using anything else is a hurdle.

Everyone I know uses the scoring rings to "measure" to the center. 1/4 to the edge of the X, 1/2 to the 9, 1 to the 8, and if you are further out than that you need to figure out what you missed and why you shot in those conditions.

I have a 12-42 and a March 10-60. I leave the NF at 42x almost all the time and the March at about 45x.

I had a 5.5-22 NF when I started and had no problems at 600-1000 yards, but the 12-42 and the March were big improvements for shot placement.

Mirage is your friend. Don't run from it.
