I have about $1200 to spend on a spotting scope. I am currently shooting rimfire out to 150 yards and .204/22-250/.223 out to 300 yards. I would like to get a spotting scope that I will not have to upgrade as i increase in caliber and shooting ability out to around 600 yards. Both of these scopes appear to be highly regarded. Is there an argument for one over the other? any input would be greatly appreciated. I bought the Konusport 80 recently. It is a serviceable tool but I would really like to have better quality glass. thanks.

The larger objective of the Nikon 82 will let in more light than the Kowa, but the Kowa's glass is reportedly something to behold.

As you say, both are highly regarded. If size isn't an issue, and you'll mainly be using it at the range, I'd opt for the larger objective. If you plan on totting this scope out into the field and use at the range, the smaller Kowa would be more appealing.

Personally went through the same exercise a few months back considering the Kowa 66 and the Vortex Razor. Stumbled into a deal for the Razor and haven't looked back.

I'd recommend giving Scott @ Liberty Optics a call. He'll give you an honest opinion.

No matter what you spend, you'll be hard pressed seeing holes in paper out beyond 300 yards. This is due to mirage.... enviromental factors, etc. Just don't expect too much out of a spotting scope at 500 600 yds in regards to holes in paper.

I too went through this same process. I chose and just got a Kowa 663 with the 20x-60x eyepiece from Scott at Liberty Optics. I felt this would work for all my needs, both in th field and at the range. The glass is first class and Scotts customer service is great. Good luck with your decision.

I have the Fieldscope and like it a lot. However, knowing what I know now I would have gotten something with a mil reticle in it. Much more useful in the field for calling shot adjustments. Just something to think about...
