I just got a Remington 700 VS in .308 in a trade. From what the prior owner said and the absence of a barrel date code puts it around a '99/'00/'01 production. It has a 26" heavy barrel and is 1:12. It has a bedded, free floated HS Precision stock. It came with a Bushnell 3200 10X-40 scope, 140 rounds of Federal Gold 168 grain and some other misc acessories. I know the 26" barrel is so 20th century, but overall, I really like the rifle.
I plan to shoot it between 200 & 600 yards to begin with. I have no interest in keeping the scope, so I don't want to waste valuable ammo zeroing it.
For glass, I want to get something along the lines of a Leupold 4.5x14-50 scope, hopefully I can score a deal on a nice used on and get some high quality rings and bases. Then, I'll shoot up the 168 grain ammo that I have and start reloading 175 grain SMKs once their gone. From what I have read, that seems like a dood match for the 26"/1:12 barrel.
Is there anything I am missing or off base about?
Thanks, Andy
