Not bad on a budget.

After researching and asking some questions here I decided to top my new Savage rifle with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 in Leupold steel one peice base and rings. This is the basic non-accutrigger and non-accustock model 11 in .308. All together I have about $640 into this rifle. This morning I got out and sighted her in using Wolf 150 grn. FMJ. After getting her dialed this was my 1st 3 shot group at 100yds:

I got similar results using Remington core-lokt ammo as well. Imagine if I used match grade ammo. I also thought about eventualy upgrading the stock and trigger, but I don't think it would do me much more good. I hope to get out to the 200-300 yd. range soon and stretch her legs a bit more, but I think this is a good start.

Don't underestimate the accuracy of Savage sticks. Are you going to handload?

I don't plan on handloading anytime soon, but I save all my brass whenever the time comes.

You will see that the group size will get smaller, much smaller. That's the beauty of handloading. Also, as you stretch your range out further, don't be surprise, if your factory ammo can't perform the way you want it to. Just a thought.

I'll definately use more quality ammo for longer range shooting, but I just thought that this was a pretty darn good start for what I had.

Also does anybody know where to get higher capacity detachable base magazines for the model 11 short action in .308 like I have?

you can get privi match ammo pretty cheap sometimes. may want to try that too. nice group. slowly making minor changes here and there you can shrink that more i bet. perferct candidate for maybe bedding, adding a brace to the foreend and some metal to stiffen it and opening the barrel channel to float it. all of that is stuff i have read about people doing on their own for little money. there are good aftermarket triggers you may be able to find used over on the savage forum

I have some good news and some bad news. good news is you are into the long range shooting and the fun starts now. The bad news is in a year after a few mods to the rifle and alittle handloading you will be pissed if you shoot a group that size unless it is at 300yds or farther.

For the record I mean no offense and I do think that is a quality budget build but I also think over time you will get much better results. Try a sharp shooters supply trigger and some match ammo and I bet you shrink your group in half.

Well said diggler, I don't think he'll take offense, and see even better results with some better ammo.

No offense taken at all. I know without a doubt with a few additions like match ammo and trigger work I would see a difference especially at longer distances. I was merely showing how good even a basic inexpensive setup with cheap ammo can shoot. It's definately just a starting point.

Bi-pod works fine. I've only used it off a bench so I' don't know how well it will hold up under heavy use, but it seems well built. Can't remember the brand, but it was only about $30-$40.
