So my wife and I have an opportunity to move to one of the locations above. We currently live in Central Indiana but it has become so over populated all of our shooting and riding places have been replaced with housing. We are not familiar with either place for shooting and UTV riding but I thought I would ask here to see if others have opinions.

Western NC and the surrounding area have good places for shooting & UTV riding. There are definitely 4 seasons there. SW of Vegas probably has more open areas for riding & shooting, but WNC has varied terrain, trees, & a number of streams and rivers as well.
All other things being equal, it's all about the weather for me. Vegas is HOT and I assume NC is humid. NC looks nice, I've never spent enough time there to form an opinion, but I think I would go in that direction. Vegas is extremely hot, for all intents and purposes, a BIG city and then there's the seedy side of things.....
I live 120 miles south of Vegas in AZ and love the area. YES its hot in the Summer but there is always something to do. The are 10's of thousands of acres of state and BLM land to shoot and there is a nice range just south of Henderson. Vegas has an active shooting club called SinCity Shooters and is a great group.
NC has a lot of stupid laws, more so than TN or GA. Everything east of Marion (on 40) is flat and dark. The large cities central and east are either dark or full of Yankees. Asheville and Boone are hippie faggot shitholes. Everything else west and north of about Morganton is poor and methed. I suggest Mitchell or Avery county and let it be known you'll burn out anyone that fucks with your stuff... seriously.
To me NC will not be much of an improvement. Its beautiful and I enjoyed living in the south on the VA NC boarder for a few years but its all populated. The humidty and growth of spores, vehicle would have yellow haze covering, had my allergies needle pegged. Check for mold when moving in. I tired to get into clubs for shooting but most had a 3 year wait and you had to be sponsored by current member. A friend got them to bend a little and accept my application but it was way over priced for what I wanted and had to work 40 hours a year clearing brush cutting grass and be a RO for weekend events. The public ranges were well out of control with inner city college kids and city dwellers. I don't ride UTVs so cant help there but I did see some trails but talking with buds who did, quite taxed and restrictive but its second hand beta.
SW of Loss Wages I think would be more open less restrictive. Wheelers are very popular in the west and less restrictive. Taxes will be less. I have time in AZ, NV, UT and ID and wheelers were daily drivers on the roads. My time in AZ could be my second home as I really enjoyed living there but crime has sky rocketed all cross the areas. ID still not bad for crime. I have min time in NV but around LV it was quite desolate. Its hot, yep its a dry heat but its freaking hot at 115f. The sun bakes. 100f with 60% humidity just pure I cant understand how people survived back then. I had no allergies and no mold yellow pollen everywhere. West is more isolationist and not as friendly as the south. Things move very slow in the south, dont be in a hurry. Out west things move and people want it now.

It's home and the mountains are beautiful, but I'm living in GA...
haha man, this is literally the exact same decision i have to make. vegas or fayetteville. im so glad this thread came up actually, lots of good info.
Not a whole lot of places to shoot long distance up in the SE mountains unless you can find a rock bluff on national forest land AND a clearing in the trees to sight in from. Vegetation is pretty dense unless you have your own land or know someone with some. It can be found but might be a hike with 1000-2000' elevation fom a road in and out. There are a couple OHV trails and fire roads but if shooting and off road are the primary reasons for a move then then the desert seems better suited.
This would be a huge life change for my wife and I but these options are a possibility. Use to love where we lived and we have a nice set up with whole house generator and nice heated/AC shop. To many assholes are moving out here from the city and it's becoming an issue. You only live once and we don't have kids or family to worry about but have to go where my skill set is wanted.
I know this is not the normal conversations on this forum but we don't do any social media and I figured there would be a few guys here that could provide information. I would need to live south West of Vegas somewhere since I would need to travel into AZ, and California in that area if I transfer or take another position out there.

There are a lot of people on the move out of the cities the last few years. Smart move but if the idea is to get remote then I’d suggest considering further than initially expected.
well, im a registered republican if that helps. but even tho Im from CA and part of the problem, i wonder what the solution is because both seattle and denver have had their real estate markets fucked by gentrification/CA people moving in. altho seattle is because of all the tech companies ruining shit. NYC tried it with price control and that failed.
North Carolina is way better than Nevada. Better jobs and more things to do. Better public services as well.

No, I don’t need a neighbor. Neighbors coming from out of state are ruining this place. I’d recommend Arizona, too.

I lived in NC twice, once while in the Marine corps and once as a civilian.
I will tell you straight off, once you get up in the hills there will be "We-In's and You-In's"

I dreaded coming south from upper New England, having been accustomed to four seasons and having a strong aversion to heat and humidity. I'm about 15 miles south of the NC line at about 1,200 ft. elevation. The elevation really does temper both heat and humidity. Forty miles southeast the average daily temps are almost ten degrees higher in summer. If you're up in elevation, it won't be that bad. Compared to Indiana, it'll be slightly warmer summers and mild winters every year.
They do have a stupid law where you have to get a pistol purchase permit. No matter where you go, you can't completely escape stupidity. If you find such a place, send me a PM. Don't post it publicly for everyone in the world to see.

With that being said.. when the family land is mine free and clear. I am packing up shop and moving to Wyoming or Idaho or Utah lol.

But the use of public lands is way better out west.. you can't shoot or ride utvs on public land here..
