I was just curious. Seems like if there was a practical way, all these hogs could feed a lot of hungry people...but they'd have to be set up for processing a shit ton of pigs. Never mind refrigeration, distribution, etc...

I know they're pests/nuisance, just seems unfortunate that they can't be used for something practical. It'd be nice if the States would step in, to offer free collection and distribution of said porkers...

If we didn’t have welfare and food stamps hungry people would eat them.

Maybe the money spent on food stamps should be spent on harvesting these pigs...seems like a twofer to me. Farmers/ranchers get the nuisance culled back, and people get fed with something they can’t use to buy cigarettes and booze.

During the mid 1950's there was one place in Mississippi that the deer population had been protected since the late 1930's. Most places in all states had very few deer left because they were killed off during the Depression to feed hungry people.

So, by the mid 1950's the deer were so overpopulated on this particular place the Mississippi Game & Fish Commission at the request of the property owners started a large live net capturing operation. They strung 1,000's of feet of nets into certain areas and then horseback riders "herded and funneled" those deer into the nets. Long lead in nets had been strung out to funnel the deer into the final nets. Any readers familiar with Commercial Fishing will well understand the method.

Once captured these deer were transplanted all over the other parts of Mississippi to restock deer in those counties. This effort took a tremendous amount of men and resources to accomplish. It went on for about 3 years, however the deer herd continued to increase on this property.

So eventually the decision was made that some cull killing of Does had to occur. It was decided that 600 does had to be shot off of that property where the deer had been overprotected for many years. So the Mississippi Game and Fish Commission in conjunction with the landowners assembled a team of shooters and helpers.

The shooters killed the Does and the helpers cleaned the deer and took the meat to Orphanages and Old Folks Homes and none of that meat was wasted.
My father was one of the shooters and took 38 Does in one single day on his best day culling. His favorite saying was:

"You judge a great hunter not by what he brings out of the woods, but by what he leaves for tomorrow. "

It personally hurt him to have to shoot that many as he grew up as a youngster when deer were very scarce and killing a Doe was considered then, to be in the class of a child molester, but he knew it had to be done for the greater good of the long time health of the deer herd.

However, Uncle Sugar and the Nanny State would never allow that to happen now. They got to protect you.

A conversation we have all too often.....seems like with all the money pumped into Ag bills and food subsidies some could be diverted to open public processing locations where piggies could be dropped, processed, and distributed to local folks in need. Win for the farmer, hunter, and general public.
One issue we have here in south Alabama is the reg requiring anyone processing pigs to be a qualified USDA processor. This eliminates most of the deer processors since they do not fall under those USDA regs. We used to have some that did it anyway but then a few years ago enforcement tightened up and many decided it was not worth it to get qualified. So getting them processed usually is not easy pending on where one is hunting due to scarce pig processors. Sometimes I dress one out and put it in a cooler on ice to transport to the processor if I am getting sausage and such. Will remove the hindquarters myself for smoking. But we kill so many most are left to feed the vultures.

Yeah, vertical integration and consolidation of the meat industry in the US has resulted in 4 Companies now controlling 85% of the processing of all meat that goes to consumers.

They the ones that lobby the USDA to have tight and expensive processing regulations so the little man is cut out of the game. It ain't about protecting consumers (that's the sales pitch) it's about putting money in Politicians Pockets and Big Corporations Pockets. Same for the Milk Industry and many other industries.

This is what I saw when I pulled into this field. There are 3-4 times this many running around this spot.

I will tell you the easiest and most effective way to get rid of the deer. Like wipe em out.

Dig a shallow open hole that will handle 50 lbs of granular salt, add Strychnine.

Then take out a large Life Insurance Policy. Cause the local Deer Hunters in that area are gonna put out a Contract out on ya.

This kill was a little more adventurous than typical this time of year. With CRP fields high in grass and weeds and trees in full leaf, we do not get to do much stalk hunting. We rely on feeders to pull the hogs into open areas. This one showed up on a feeder right at dark thirty when I was dropping off a buddy to his stand. We were overlooking a CRP field from a higher elevation down to the feeder several hundred yards. Wind was at our backs and shape of field combined with elevation change made stalking difficult. We could tell after a couple minutes of watching and deciding on best course that he was getting antsy and sniffing around and figured our scent had made it down. We decided to cut right and stalk which made obtaining a LOS difficult as the weeds are so high. Hogs have decimated the field though and we could navigate from crater to crater without making any noise though. We got to 75 yards before we could see the ground below the feeder and no hog. Started talking and decided to get the buggy and follow thru with original setup plan. I just happened to scan one more time with the Atlas and saw this guy circling in the woods. I got my rifle up and had a great LOS when he popped out. My buddy could not get on him with vegetation from his position so I made the shot. Was aiming for the head but shot slightly on his right side and missed the skull......but the .308 is very forgiving in regard to shot placement

something they can’t use to buy cigarettes and booze.
Food or Cigarettes + Booze.
That's no choice.
It would have to be a choice between breathing Air or Cigarettes + Booze.
Anyway, Nice shooting guys.
In NY we don't have any nuisance hogs to hunt all year, so we need to wait till varmint season rolls around in October, then we have 5 months to hunt.
Till then, I read these posts and wait for colder covid free days.

There is a place about 40 miles South of where I hunt that will buy wild hogs, but they have to be alive. They’re butchered and exported for food. I’ve also heard of a place in North Texas that will buy dead ones to process and use for dog food, but that’s a long (6-7 hour) drive from where I am.
I’ll clean a few young ones a year and give them to a good friend of mine, and I take a few backstraps and hams. The majority get left for the vultures.

Oh you'll have no shortage of people who will always tell you, next time you go I want a pig. But when you call them the afternoon before going out to tell them you'll likely have them a pig later on that evening they always backstroke and say either they'll take one next time or they'll take it if I do all the work cleaning the nasty bastard and have it on ice for them.

Nope.

The buzzards are more than thankful.

Never a truer statement made.

Yeah, you out there at 1-2 am fighting tall grass, heat, etc etc, working your butt off to kill em, and nair a one of those people that said they will come get them, just call, will answer. Buzzards gotta eat too.

Same with deer on crop damage permits. The same people that don’t have time to deal with one at their convenience think you have plenty of time to pick up 100 of them. And leave them lay and it’s a waste and blah blah blah.

The people that support and write laws like that should be forced to pickup and clean the animal weather it’s a 25* morning or a 105* evening.

So so so true.....my standard response now is....I will be back in town between 11:30 PM and 2:00 AM, do you want me to roll it off in the driveway or the front yard?......if someone really wanted one and just needed some help dealing with it I'd of course do so, but as you mentioned, most folks just want the iced down skinned and quartered version.....maybe with a little marinade already mixed in.....we do have some fat buzzards though!

I will say this much. There are a few Vietnamese and Cambodians around here that it matters not the hour, location, or weather. You call them when they are needing a pig and they'll roll up several deep and make quick work of it.

That's because most first or second generation Asians still know free meat ain't anything to sneeze at (speaking as a 3rd generation 1/2 Asian).

I picked off this shoat this morning for a Vietnamese buddy of mine. He’s the only person I know that’ll hunt with me whether it’s freezing cold and rainy or 100 degrees out, just for a chance to get a hog or a deer, then I have fight him to not to pay me for it. Unfortunately he’s a terrible shot.

Amazing what a little communist/socialist perspective brings. A bunch of spoiled Americans could use some.

Anyways, appreciate you guys sharing some story w/ your exploits...and pics of course! :D

My wife just watched a big bobcat get one of our chickens this morning.🤬 unfortunately I cant shoot or trap the damn thing. I believe he got another one yesterday as well. Not good.

Give some of the chickens some Grenades and send them to one of them Middle Eastern Suicide Training Camps. No use going out alone.

Not your state, obviously, but here is the Montana statute on this issue. You may want to look into it. FWIW, both wolves and mountain lions have a "season." Grizzly are protected and do not.

87-6-106. Lawful taking to protect livestock or person. (1) This chapter may not be construed to impose, by implication or otherwise, criminal liability for the taking of wildlife protected by this title if the wildlife is attacking, killing, or threatening to kill a person or livestock. However, for purposes of protecting livestock, a person may not kill or attempt to kill a grizzly bear unless the grizzly bear is in the act of attacking or killing livestock.
(2) A person may kill or attempt to kill a wolf or mountain lion that is in the act of attacking or killing a domestic dog.
(3) A person who, under this section, takes wildlife protected by this title shall notify the department within 72 hours and shall surrender or arrange to surrender the wildlife to the department.

Lol. $10 of chickens.

How about the millions/billions of $$$ of stock and crop lost by commercial farmers to wolves/bears/black headed vultures/pigs/coons/deer/elk etc.

I'm on your side. We are pretty free here to kill anything that harasses livestock. I mean, you can't shoot deer for eating your grass, but predation permits are readily available. I think if somebody ever saw a pig in Montana it would last about 13 seconds.

...when he has nothing left in a week, that's a big deal for him.

Bottom line, all pests need ridding...regardless of scale. States without provision to protect your property, are failing their constituents.

I dont believe I can here in Wisconsin. They are protected and can only be trapped. Is a limited draw tag.
Here's what you can probably really do. I grew up trapping foxes and after a while they get pretty trap smart. Here is a technique I used to catch the smart ones.

Take a live chicken and put in a small cage where paws can't get through. Take chicken in cage and put at the base of a large tree. Find some deadfall and put on both sides (kinda build a wall) put a few over the top as well so that the only way in is straight on from the front. So place you a live trap (cage type) that bobcat will have to go through to get to chicken. I used to put leg hold traps for foxes, but I'm suggesting a catch and release miles away.

So dead bait trap shy foxes, and I assume smart bobcats, when they get near the chicken and chicken starts panicking, well they just can't help themselves they gonna dive in for the kill. So you catch bobcat and haul him 50 miles away and release him to be someone else's problem.

Oh, I forgot one critical part. Administer mouth to mouth resuscitation to chicken and immediately take to the psychiatric ward for therapy and rehabilitation.

Sorry for the late reply brother. I've been out of this thread for a bit.

I will occasionally cut some backstraps or hams off of a young sow, but mostly I let them rot...surprisingly we all sang cadence about blood making the grass grow when we were in...but it actually doesnt... quite the opposite as they leave big brown dead spots.

In the winter, bald eagles come through the area. They'll nest on the ranch as they scavenge a lot too. I love hearing them chatter between themselves for months on end.

Hog carcasses also make good coyote bait.

Former 8531, later 0931 here myself...

What the warden don't know, wont hurt him or you. Just don't go bragging about it.

I may catch some flak from the "subsonic isn't for hunting" camp for this, but it is what it is.

I have been playing with the 300 Blackout, 190 gr Sub-X. I chrono'd that ammo and was getting some low velocity spread on it surprisingly. I built up a profile using the Hornady 190 gr BTSP bullet and loaded it onto the RAPTAR, and went to check how it jived with the real world. My goal was to stretch it out to 200 yards with reliable hits, but hoped for 300. 300 was not a problem on paper. Hits were dead on what was called for. I have been hunting a few smaller fields that have houses fairly close. One has a 24 hour non-stop Methican American Compound across the road. My goal was to draw as little attention to myself as possible while in that field. It stretches about 300 yards across.

I connected with a doe at 255 yards using my modified LMT CSW with a 10.5" barrel, S&B 1-8 SD, CNVD-LR, and Wilcox RAPTAR. I initially ranged her (not shown in the video), and shot. She took the hit, ran a little and stopped. I re-ranged her, shot and hit again. This repeated once again, and she ran just a bit after that and collapsed dead. I look at the kill with these bullets similar to a kill with a bow, not the blown apart wound you find with a normal rifle. She would have died in a few minutes from that first shot, but she would have had to bleed out, same as with an arrow impact. I just went ahead and took the opportunity to put a couple more in her. When you watch the video, notice the arc of that 190 gr bullet as it goes down toward her.

I am really beginning to be a believer in the 300 BO with the 190gr subs for a niche role IF you do it right and make a good shot into the vitals. Head on shots into the chest seem to be pretty much DRT or if they do run it isn't far. That subsonic bullet penetrates very well, so if you hit them head on you are taking out a lot of the good stuff clean through the deer. With the subs, you can keep killing and killing. They may run out of the field to the woodline when you shoot one, but in 10 to 15 minutes they'll come right back out. The biggest thing is timing. A deer is not near as bad about it, but a moving/mousing coyote or semi-spooked hog would require you to track that animal a bit to figure out his movement timing. Otherwise your bullet make land where he was, and not where he is. The head on shot, with the deer gives you the benefit of having a solid killing target no matter if her head is up in alert or down feeding. Around here there is little wind at night usually. I was hoping they get the 8.6mm Creedmoor online, so I could get a barrel for my AI, but if they don't I may look into that B&T SPR300 for a super quiet bolt gun option. I can really see that being handy in certain situations.

Make sure you have it in HD, and if you play it at .25x you can see the bullet better.

The running joke is that guys who hunt hogs with subsonic 300blk spend more time looking for shot hogs than they do looking for hogs to shoot at.

"He was right here when I hit him".

I agree with you. Well placed shots are going to kill, but they do kind of leave a wound channel somewhat similar to a bow in that the crushing/tearing damage that you get with a high velocity rifle bullet just isn't there. This is much less of a problem if you can keep additional animals stationary.

I think you've found a pretty good role for your subsonic stuff...good job!

Took my new .308 out that had been giving me fits due to an obstructed gas tube and then an undersized gas port on the barrel. I put my new Thermion XP50 on it that had been working great so far.

Right out of the truck, I have 11 dead pixels. Mother-Fu@k#r.

I was so pissed and cussing out Pulsar in my head that I almost walked by this sounder. Almost.
