Are Chrony as bad as they say, when it comes to poor readings, needing the right lighting angle, small triangular shooting area to shoot through to get a good reading?

A lot of people have said to get Oehler. Thoughts?

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

Had a Chrony, have an Oehler. Get an Oehler between the two. Night and day. The sensors are more covered and less effected by light or anything. Also spaced farther and have a proof channel. Had problems with the Chrony but not anymore.

that saying that keeps popping up (pay once and cry once) applies here. get the Oehler. Found mine on CL for 225.00 (Like 500.00) from the factory. Best CL find yet.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

When you say, "are Chronys as bad as they say" are you referring to the people, like myself, that wasted hundreds of rounds over a Chrony getting bogus velocities that never worked with a ballistic program because they were wrong and never consistent? Ever since I got an Oehler I've had a much easier time matching my actual drop data to what a ballistic program predicts.

Velocities from a Chrony will have you chasing your tail because they are so random and wrong.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean, "dope at distance is really all that matters," but you will be able to predict drop at distance quiet well once you have a good idea what your velocity is, which you won't if your using a Chrony.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

I don't know a heck of a lot about "Chrony" but my personal opinion is they are kinda like a toy, not a serious instrument. If somebody is a happy customer, great but I'm not convinced. Don't waste time convincing me.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

IMHO the one good thing about a shooting chrony is that some people are actually happy when they put a shot into the middle of it.

They are then forced to make up their minds and end up with a far better chronograph. Don't necessarily need to go all the way up to an Oehler as there are some good ones along the way to the top. CED's are one. I have a PACT that I'm pretty happy with. I have a Shooting Chrony that I may "donate" if I can find a place that will allow me a deduction. Worth more to me that way.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

ES is very important for even considering a load for long range use. Oehler is the only way to these accurately IMHO.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

I'm sure that spending the extra on an Oehler is worth the extra money however I've got a CED pro and it has a cheap outer shell however seems to repeat well and easy to use and $130. I've been doing a lot of load development and it gives me the ability to shoot several strings then I can take it back to the house and record all the information. I believe the information that it is telling me because of the expected changes that I see in different loads, primers etc. I don't expect it to last for 25 years but I don't know anyone that has a chrono that has had the same one for more than 7 or 8 years, even the pricier ones so as long as this works well then why not IMO.

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

I've had my Oehler 35P for at least 15 years and it still works perfectly. While the display doesn't have much in the way of capacity, the printed tapes make a nice way to record later or save for you records.

I feel the same way!!!

Re: Oehler vs Chrony Chronograph

You might want to consider expanding your product search to include a Pro Chrono. I read through a lot of info on the net. The Pro Chrono gets reasonable good reports and going to the range they are the most used of any of the brands. I'm happy with mine, its use is straight forward and works every time.

That's a good answer for those that do not write to the question and why the replies seem a bit one sided. Of course there are alternatives, some quite acceptable. But, I'm an Oehler fanboy. BB
