I'm in Southern Indiana (Louisville area) and the stifling heat lately has Me jonesing to take my Jeep and do some off roading (With the air conditioning on). The problem is that I usually drive to Moab for that kind of thing. Anybody know of anyplace around here to break in some fresh mods on a Jeep? I know about the lame off road parks such as,"Badlands" where You have to pay to drive on some dudes farm. Hoosier National forest no longer has any open off road trails.

I'm having a hell of a time finding anything. Been scouring the internet, and studying topo maps to no avail. The Floyd Knobs area in New Albany, Indiana must be full of trails, but I'm coming up with zilch.

Any input would be appreciated. Mac

Re: Off roading question for Jeepers

It's only minor stuff that I wanna make sure is up to snuff before my next trip to Moab. 2001 Cherokee. Just added a Advance Adapters Slip Yoke Eliminator, an refurbished frt drive shaft ouy of a Dodge Dakota for the rear. Converted the pinion yoke to a much stronger Ubolt style. I had already added 3" of lift some time ago, and have the rear disc brake conversion ready to put on. Just not gonna do that until the shoes that are on it now are worn out. They are working fine. I havent shot any pict at this point, cause it's nothin special, but I want it to be reliable.

Cherokees can be had for cheap, and are pretty capable.

Old Broncos are great...as far as tougher than Jeeps. Yes, if ya have the money. Just the Dana 44 axles on a bronco cost more than my last Cherokee. I would definitely like to have one though.

Any info about trails?

BULLSHIT! I guess you have not seen many jeeps then. Stock the bronco may have better axles but thats about it. My 93 YJ's rear axle is a ford but it is an 8.8 out of a 97 explorer and the front is waiting on a 44 to show up. 99% of the time it is all the driver anyways. I spend ALOT of time wheeling and believe what you want but if a jeep cant get there it is either the driver or not ment to be reached.

Re: Off roading question for Jeepers

A guy I work with takes his jeep over to Hot Springs pretty often. From the pictures I've seen it's pretty rocky and a good mix of terrain. It would be a pretty good hike from you though. Isn't there some off roading at "land between the lakes"? Seems like I remember them holding jeep jamborees there?

Do You mean French Lick?
I looked up Jeep Jamboree and They do have a run there in October. I would like to know where that trail is for sure. Don't care to run in the Jamboree though, as the 150 dollar minimum fee is enough gas money to get me to Moab.

Could be French Lick, I don't know? I do remember one being called land between the lakes jamboree though. They used to have brochures at the jeep dealers with all the jamborees listed. I never went on any when I had my jeeps, I mainly just wheeled on a couple of farms and timber land that friends/family owned and some state lands when nobody was looking. Dad went on the Rubicon Trail Jamboree back in the 80's, that is something that I'd love to do one day, the pictures he has are pretty awesome.

edit: here's something google turned up looks like it's held at turkey creek ohv park in marshall county KY.
