I know there are a ton of great smiths out there that can build you what ever you want but, I was wondering what are my options for off the shelf rifles. I put together this list, is there any other guns that deserve a look?

I will look them over and try to find the best one for me as Iam sure they are all top shelf. Just curious if there are any others that I should be considering.

what do you consider "off the shelf"? GAP has guns ready to ship on a regular basis and i've seen shops stock custom guns from reputable smiths.

I'd say AI all the way

Either an AI AW, or you'll probably find one of the AI-AE MK II rifles would be just as good.

One nice plus on those, when you need to change the barrel it's quick and easy.

ive never shot or handled an AI, but the TRG is a solid package.

Mine was shooting mighty fine and true today all the way out to 700 meters

I would have liked to reach out a bit further but that's as far as the range goes.

i have a trg 22 and love it. the only other rifle on the list i would consider is the aiax it is so similar to a tube gun that i would love to try one and someday when they get closer to $5000 i will.

I have a $585 dollar Remington 700 spst .308 that will shoot one hole groups at 250 yds with lapua brass and 168 amax's. I looked in Midway USA today and I think just for the AI Stock was 16 or 1700$.... Hell that's a Night Force NXS. All I'm saying is that people are taking it and making it way to technical. Get a gun, free float it, reload for it, put nice glass ex. Viper Pst sfp... 750.00$ and instead of a $6000.00 AI you can spend 2500 to 3000.00 for all of it and acheive the same results with a little time and a little bit more money in order to learn what it likes.. just my thoughts

I think the TRG is the way to go. It's cheaper than the AI, the trigger is better and it's more ergonomic in my opinion. If I werent so far into my custom build I'd have one in my safe already.

BM11 and I just finished up shooting today with my TRG22 and his AIAX both have the same optic and tuned hand loads. We went out to 909 yds and were doing very good but neighter of us think we can shoot the rifles to their capiability especially at that range. I have to say I would choose one of these rifles over a custom for the reason of the action/trigger design being far better than a Remington or a Remington clone. Now with that being said there are some VERY talented smiths out there the only problem is they are stuck using an inferior action/trigger design. Now between the two (AIAX/AW or the TRG) I say the AIAX/AW has the edge over the TRG all be it a small one. So no budget the AIAX is my first choice (not the AW b/c the stock dosent fit me good) followed by the TRG and on MY BUDGET the TRG is first choice b/c it is so close to the AI actions in quality and reliability.

My point to all this is I dont think you will find many educated people in this sport would be willing to go from one of these platforms to a Remington based (custom or not) platform and feel like they were going backwards.

not to argue with you, but what do you feel is inferior on the 700 type actions? is it the longer bolt throw?

and the trigger? do you like the two stage, or is it that the remington trigger isnt as easily removed?

Given the criteria of "tactical" rifles that implies specific operating conditions ie. dirty/harsh enviroments. The Remington style action and trigger has design features (or lack there of)that will contribute to failures in these conditions. The bolt lift is longer being a 2 lug vs a 3 lug. It will take more $ to build a Remington or Remington clone to the level of a TRG and you still have the potential reliability issues. The AI rifles are the least susceptible to failures dur to enviromental conditions but you will pay for it. Now with all this in mind do I have anything against a rifle built on a 2 lug push feed Remington style action that has beed properly built HELL NO. They are great, but they just are not as good IMO.

You need to first decide how much $ you have to spend, that will help you decide which direction to go. When I turned 18 I started out with a REM 700P LTR and learned to shoot it. Now older and more financially stable, my toys are a little more expensive and a lot more accurate!

I have a off the shelf Remington 700 Police in a .300 Win Mag. It comes with an HS Precision Stock and a great trigger. Ended up getting it threaded and putting a badger break on it bc it would kick your %@^% in the dirt. I put a night force on it and can hit a 10 inch steel plate all day long at 700 yds with r22 and 210 berger vld's. I paid only 850$ for the gun and the break plus the job was only 170$.

The OP asked about high end off the shelf rifles. Why are we talking about the Rem M700? It's not high end. We can talk about how accurate they are until the cows come home but they in no way compare to ANY of the rifles the OP asked about. The quality and reliability of the rifles in question so far blows the Rem out of the water, they're not even on the same lake.

To the OP, if you're looking for an accurate off the shelf rifle, any of traditional three (Winchester, Remington, or Savage) will do you fine. If you're looking for a top of the line off the shelf rifle, you would be foolish to look at any of those three.

Until you start shooting high end rifles you will never understand.

My suggestion is if you are happy with mid-level rifles. Stick with them. Don't even get behind an expensive one.

I have a safe full of extremely accurate Remington 700's. Some have won me quite a bit of money at competitions. None are anything close to a AI/TRG/Blaser/etc.

Now you can build a full custom 700 pattern rifle and gain most of the advantages my AI has over the 700, however it's no longer a "factory" rifle at that point.

Also, you will excuse me if I don't believe your SPS Tactical in the factory stock is shooting "one hole" groups at 250 unless you are talking about one or two shot groups. I will accept that the stars may have aligned one day and you put three shots touching, but I will place my money down if you think it will pass a 5x5 accuracy test.

IMHO the Accuracy International AE MkII is one of the best balances of price, durability and accuracy. I looked long and hard before I bought mine. After lots of trigger time and hard use I am still happy with my choice.

I agree for the most part as I own a TRG22 and an AI. Both are very accurate and reliable but I think the edge in durability goes to the AI, especially with the skins over the aluminum chassis vs the stock on the TRG. Just my opinion but as I own both,it seems very evident that the TRG stock cannot take the abuse that the AI can and after all these are purpose built rifles that are supposed to see hard use.

There is NOTHING that an AI can do that a TRG cannot except cost you more money. There is NO benefit the AI has over the TRG.

Lest we forget the TRG was a purpose built rifle built in a Scandinavian country for some of the world most harshest conditions. Remember Finland is in the Arctic circle. Accuracy International build a rifle for Arctic conditions. Sako builds a rifle for every day conditions in the Arctic Circle.

Now if you're worried about scratching your custom duracoat, or changing your skins to match your Tacticool gear, then maybe switchable skins is for you.

But ask yourself, what is the functional purpose of removable skins? Possibly to be replaced when they break?

i dont think he meant that the changeable skins made it any tougher...its the blocky aluminum frame under the skins that gives it strength.

i own a trg and have an aics chassis...but i can tell you if one was being dropped out of an airplane to me, i would pick the ai every time.

the sako stock feels much better, but i feel it isnt the most rugged design. ive heard and seen a few pics of them breaking at or near the attachment point.

the bolt handle has also been known to break off. its partially hollow and a screw in design. im not sure if the ai is a one piece bolt, but i have never heard of one breaking.

i dont think you would be able to break the aluminum chassis on a trg unless you run over it with a bulldozer. i think the weakness how the rear stock hooks up to the rest of the rifle. im not about to go torture test it to see how much abuse it can take due to the insane cost of replacing it.

youve seen the manners (iirc) stock propped up on a couple boards with a car on top if it, right? ill bet a dollar to a donut a trg wont hold it up. im not even sure about the ai for that matter.

im not familiar with the 90's ai stocks or their problems, so i cant comment on that.

the Manners is a whole different animal. Ironically I have talked to Tom Manners about doing a stock for a TRG. Although the folder brings an entire new dimension to the stock.

Nothing is perfect, we all know that. Both platforms have proven themselves time and time again.

As a side note I just bought and watched the PBS documentary "Fire and Ice" The 1939 Finno- Russian war. Just watching that made me freeze and I have done Artic Warfare Training in Norway. Great watch. Z

I have seen the Manners pic w/ the car on top and that is impressive, but its just a stock and that dosent ammount to shit. Put a barreled action in there and then drive the car up on it Ill bet that same dollar to the donut that you be adding a bit more wind on your next shot. My point is this: the Manners is a very tough stock no doubt but I dont think there is a sub 20# rifle out there that will stand up to the same test and not be bent or distorted. You CAN break anything if you try hard enough and some times that happens but its very seldom that you will break a AI rifle or a TRG and that is hard to say for anything else (keep in mind I have yet to have any hands on with the DTA). Just my 2 cents.

Their are things a 308 AW has over the TRG-22 , the main one for me concerns the magazines , the AW runs a excellent double stack , double feed & to me is a much better mag .
The Sako TRGs in 308 run a double stack , single feed posn mag , much like a old subgun mag , and in my experiance has not been as reliable in operation , I had a brand new mag that I could never get to feed at all on my TRG .

RE folders , you will find that when you spec a TRG folder , that you are looking at the same price as a AI AW , and in that case , buy the AW .

The Sako is a much lighter weight rifle , compared to a AW , parts seem to be much easier to get for the AW series , but , I donot think you will break much on either system .

I have used both a AI and a PGW both great weapons but just something about them that said ain't me if you know what I mean. So I bought a few Mauser's and there OK but still not the right ones Bought a Savage and yes I know POS compared to all the rest but it seemed to suit me trigger felt fine with a little work it was made better. Reset the head space on it right away and polished the lands and groves with some JB Bore paste and shine. Changed the stocks to one that fit me not one that was the most popular bought glass that was great for to cheap for most on here it isn't NF,S & B, USO or any high dollar scope paid 325.00 for it and my WOTAC is great shoot out to a 1000 regularly and just started to work on shooting farther. You can buy the best in the world but in the end if it doesn't fit you or your personality it won't make you a better anything. But hell what do I know.

I don't think you get it. Nobody is saying that the Remingtons or Savages aren't accurate. The issue is with durability and function in adverse conditions.

Hahaha, another internet sharpshooter. Oh, and George and I have talked about it all the time. I've owned more GAP built 700s that you can shake a stick at. Including the one I will be shooting at the Mammoth match. So before you try and name drop, don't. George is a personal friend and we've had more conversations about rifles than you can count.

A) I have been under the impression that while a TRG is a less expensive platform initially, some of the other costs make it close to what an AI is - it that correct?

B) I have seen a few pictures and read a few more tales of folks that have broken the TRG stocks - particularly the fixed model. In fact there was a post about this just last week complete with a photo. Now I think I just read above that the TRG has an AL frame - so when you see a photo like that or read about it - are we really only talking about a cosmetic issue?

C) Can a user swap out parts themselves on a TRG as easily as a AI? Do the parts swap in between multiple TRGs like AIs do?

Lest we forget the TRG was a purpose built rifle built in a Scandinavian country for some of the world most harshest conditions. Remember Finland is in the Arctic circle. Accuracy International build a rifle for Arctic conditions. Sako builds a rifle for every day conditions in the Arctic Circle.

Now if you're worried about scratching your custom duracoat, or changing your skins to match your Tacticool gear, then maybe switchable skins is for you.

But ask yourself, what is the functional purpose of removable skins? Possibly to be replaced when they break? </div></div>While I completely respect you mike, I whole heartedly disagree. The AI system allows you to order a barrel and install it at home, the TRG does not. My personal TRG's trigger failed from grit getting into it (I eventually fixed it on my own) I have not heard of this happening on an AI.

Finally, I have heard stories of TRG's bolt handles breaking off in the field, not so with the AI.

The TRG is the best rifle for the money, IMO. The AI is the best rifle, money aside, IMO.
