Once it's cleaned up, cut the appropriate slot for proper interface with the mounting rails on the hand guard

I wonder if you could mount what you cut off by mounting a aluminum rail section on each side , maybe 4 @8-32 on each side. So you’ll have a srs hand guard and turn it to covert length. Probably may not stay tight though. Idk.

A big shout out to Mark at SAC for building me a 28" 300 Norma Mag barrel for my SRS. This is one of the best 10 shot 100 yard groups I have ever shot and the 300 is not easy to shoot BTW - I pulled the 10th shot to the left. Anyone that needs barrels, give Mark at SAC a shout!

Anyone running a .458 Socom in a DT?

I’m thinking of a suppressed 16” Covert throwing subsonic heavies plus a ballistic tip load in to 300gr range. No real practical purpose in mind (very few hogs here) but a fun and unusual tool for the cost of a barrel.

I know choosing an AR length round is limiting max performance but as above I don’t think I need more case capacity. That said I’d expect to be able to push the round a little harder in a bolt gun if needed.

.458 Socom gives access to a wider range of bullets than .450 Bushmaster and the shouldered case is more appealing to me than straight walled.

Coldboremiracle I saw your video of a .450 Bushmaster. Any comments or learnings? I know some state laws benefit straight walled cases for hunting, is that why you went .450? I’m assuming you are feeding from a .308 mag?

Any advice appreciated!

Tony

.458 win mag? I have considered that my self, you can still load sub and have meaningful case capacities.

I’ve mused on that and also .450 Marlin, in my mind I see potential feeding problems with a long fat round hitting the upper chamber before it clears the mag in the DT but I have no practical experience to base that on.

Also no experience of belted rounds but that does not feel like much of a leap.

Interesting. How does it feel.

It makes the grip a bit thicker of course, but I think it's good and adds ton of traction to what was, IMO, a pretty slippery grip.
I've since painted my SRS and couldn't find the same model in a color I liked, so I went with these, which also work well:

The OD green one was the best match. I guess I don't have a close-up of the new one, but here's what it looks like on the gun:

Why fool with the little stuff? I've got one in 12.7 X 48 also known as 510 Whisper. It works really well and when loaded with quality bullets and powders it is capable of sub moa accuracy subsonic or supersonic. 700 gr Hornady AMAX at 1050 fps can be pretty devastating. 300gr Barnes soft flat points at 2300 fps can be as well. No need to play with toy rounds like the 458 Socom. (It was meant for poodle shooter AR15s.)

I think the real problem you'll have with the socom round is the lack of a bolt to fit the case head. Since its rebated to fit the AR15 setup with a 7.62X39 bolt there isn't a size for the DT you could open up to fit it. Its smaller than all but the 223 conversions and I don't know if you could open up one of those bolts or what the cost would be to do so. You would be better served to use one of the rounds based on something with a larger case head to fit a DT bolt. There are guys wildcatting all sorts of stuff based on the 338 Lapua, Remmie ultra mag and WSM cases that work very well. I think the only real advantage you might have with the socom or the beowulf is the availability of ammo commercially. Might be important to you but the costs will be higher for both ammo and components to make the rifle work with it.

The 458 Socom uses a 308 bolt. So that is not an issue. We played with it and feeding was problematic. The extreme rebated rim wasn't friendly in this system. The 450 Bushmaster we built for Cold Bore Miracle needed a little altering to the mags that we had Desert Tech Solutions do, and it feeds flawlessly. If you want more bullet options, just run a .458 rifle bullet through a sizing die for pistol bullets. The 400gr speer jackets soft points are great bullets.

As ever great info here, I think you just saved me a ton of trouble!

Any detail/pics you can share on the magazine changes ?

Did you look at anything longer like the .450 Marlin for example?

I had not thought of resizing bullets, that certainly increases the options for the Bushmaster.

As above .308 bolt face so simple from that perspective.

12.7x48 sounds interesting ?

Are you running it on an SRS? Does it mag feed ? The idea of a long fat round worried me re: feeding.

How does the grip attach exactly? My buddies have some...just have never taken the grip off.

It's part of the entire skin. You can't remove just the grip. So it would have to slide over the grip or drill a hole in the skin. Can't think of another way to get one on securely, but you guys are much smarter than I so maybe there's more ideas.
