Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Planning on picking one up from the current Group Buy. This thread has been very helpful. I'm only about half way through it but I thought I'd throw out a couple question.

I saw pictures somewhere with a DTA with a modular rail. Is that going to be available for the SRS as a retro fit? Also is there any plans for back straps adjustable pistol grips? The grip looks on the large side?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Smoked me a deer yesterday with the SRS, using the 7SAUM barrel of course, and 162 Amax's. 435yds (same distance as my elk
crazy.gif
) It was awsome, bullet hit less than an inch or so from my POA.

Here's the shot, sorry but the camerawork is less than perfect. I was trying to shoot! Enjoy in HD, you can see the trace right up to his rib cage.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

To run a NF 5.5-22x56 will the NF 1.375 20 moa unimount be a good choice for clearance for the scope and will it be to low for a food cheek weld? Anyone running this?

Was thinking about the dta mount in 30 moa but didn't like the idea of using the spacers. Are the spacers gtg? And I should just go with the dta?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

The DTA mount works fine with the spacers and many of us are using them with great results. If the spacers are the thing putting you off than don't worry about it. If you're looking for more glitz and glam there are others you can consider....but why?

Just my opinion of course

I have been running the DTA 30 MOA mount with spacers for 3 years. One of the scopes I ran it with was that exact NF. Works great, so long as that scope height works good for you.

I just went back through this ENTIRE thread trying to find the hide member that does custom cut foam for hard cases without finding him. Anyone know who it might be? I've got a requirement for a large amount of equip cases to be cut and wanted to bring the work to some one here. Thanks for the help!

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

New bolt : Big improvement, much more robust, what I expect on a military rifle, machine work/construction is exceptional, I have and others have shot about 600 plus rounds .308.

Much better extractor design, the expansion collars on each end reduce bolt diameter improved bolt manipulation especially when dirty, better method to disassemble bolt of course the changeable bolt heads are a great innovation. The floating bolt head IMO is another plus in bolt lock up and chamber alignment.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Thanks frank and fireguyty

I'll probably end up with the DTA mount in that case. With the spaces they are both about the same price and if I ever take the SB or PH plunge I'll be GTG.

Do you think the shorter height of the NF unimount would be a benefit or since most would consider the DTA mount the perfect height would that make the NF too short??

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Okay, covert 16" 1-8twist owners... What bullets are you running for supersonic? I would like to use 168 amax and possibly 155 amax and 155 scenars. On subs will 180 work or do I need to use 220?

Thanks..

Sorry for the confusion I meant 1-8.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

1:10 twist Covert barrels? Was that a special run? Do tell. They're normally 1:8 and from my experience they prefer the heavier bullets when shot supersonic. In my testing I tried some 155 Scenar and 168SMK loads that were well proven in my 20" and 24" .308s but didn't group very well. However, it shot my 175SMK loads like a champ!

I remember someone chiming in that they were close to place that cut them...think poster was from Plano, Tx??

Can you stack two barrels in the storm case they sell?
Was thinking of a bigger case for two extra barrels...

DB, me and several others shoot the 175SMK in the covert 16" 1-8 barrel. with 43.5gr of RL-15 I am getting around 2530fps. With spectacular performance for such a short and small gun. I have also shot plenty of 168amx's out of it as well, and they are great too.

As far as subsonic, sure 180's will work, but I would go bigger, and take advantage of the 1-8 twist. I shoot 210VLD's, and am going to try the 208Amax's (purely economical), with the 210's I have had surprising accuracy and hits beyond 450yds.

What powder are you using and what seating depth or COAL on the 210VLDs?

For subsonics I like Hornady 225gr BTHPM, but for powder I've been using Trailboss and the stdev of velocity is too high for long-range accuracy.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Here is the latest in the lineup of my barrels. This one is a .338BR 17" stainless PacNor barrel. I just finished it last night. It uses 6 or 7mm BR brass necked up to .338 and intended primarily for subsonic shooting using 300gr Matchkings or other heavies. It can also run the lighter .338 selections like the 200gr in the pictures with velocities up to 2200fps so far. This particular rifle has only been test fired for function so I can't give any accuracy info yet. I've had other rifles in this call though that did quite well. The standard .308 mag works well for both the lighter and heavier bullet loads. Recoil is pretty light as would be expected from a rifle this heavy. The suppressor reduces the recoil even more though with the lighter powder charges it has less effect. (The weight of the can is probably the big helper in this case.) Pictures show the rifle with the can installed and removed as well as one shot of the 2 different 338BR loadings compared to the .308 they were originally based on way back when. The can is funny colored from testing we did on the .338 Lapua Mag. It was a torture test with 50rds rapid fired to check for heat damage. It passed. Right now the can has about 1000rds through it with 850 being the 338 Lapua mag and the rest being the .338BR on another rifle. Its a good quiet can and works well on both. I guess I may need to engrave the bolt sleeve with another cal....

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Its the DTA 30 MOA mount with a 5.5-22 X 56 Nightforce. The front bell is pretty close to the rail but has just enough room to fit the scope cover on. Since I got rid or the long SRS handguard I can use the sunshade without any trouble....unless I'm shooting a short barrel with no can. The blast can carbon up the front of the bell....its not normally a problem since I prefer to shoot with a can.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

^^^Thanks again Frank. So with the longer SRS hand guard the sunshade would be a problem?

I'm planning on running the same scope on a DTA SRS. I'd like to run the shade if I can. I was going to go with the 30 MOA but If the shade is going to make contact maybe I should go with the 20 MOA?

You can use the sunshade with no problems on with the long handguard but getting the cover on it can be a pain. Its pretty close to the rail with the shade on.

I am a huge 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser fan.

Is this caliber available for this platform and if not, is there a 6.5mm equivalent? (I have a metricf-ton of 6.5 bullets)

Thanks.

I know of guys with 6.5 X 47 Lapua, 260 remington and 6.5 Creedmore setups so there are a few out there. I'm not sure what the case head diameter is on the 6.5 Swede but I think its an odd one....if it fits the .308 bolt head it too could be used. It is a good one indeed and the others are pretty hot right now as well. Good to great accuracy and good long range capability.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the case head diameter but I think you are right that it is an odd one which would probably explain why I haven't seen one.

If it isn't possible, what is the group feelinng about the best 6.5 alternative? Thanks again.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

conndcj.....I can only speak for my 6.5 creedmoor, but I LOVE this round. It's got the right ballistics, very little recoil, good factory ammunition at a fair price and plenty of components for those that reload.

I am very confident with the 6.5 creed, but I get schooled by the 260 guys from time to time, so that's an option too.

If your looking for a custom barrel, contact Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs....he's a great 'smith!

---good luck in your search, and BUY a DTA!!!

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

according to my search the 6.5 X 55 has a rim diameter of .480 and the .308 has a rim diameter of .473. It might fit in the bolt face on the SRS and if so it would be a great round for the rifle. Not sure if it would be any better or worse than the current crop of 6.5's but it could work if its what you want.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Question: Does anyone know what angle-cosine indicator fits on the rail of a DTA rifle?

I have a Badger Ordnance Angle Cosine Indicator Kit with Picatinny-Style Mount but it does not fit on my DTA SRS rail.

Thanks.

How is it not fitting? I run the HORUS ACI and level combo on one SRS and levels on the Covert and HTI. They all work fine for me.

Yes, I cannot fault anything about that picture... I see the perfect match, both are well built and I would be happy taking all the time in the world to practice with both

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Th

Desert Tactical Arms sponsored a special side match at the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational Crap Shoot. Each shooter took three shots prone at 100 yards with a DTA SRS chambered in .308 Winchester. The ammunition used was Desert Tactical Munitions 175 grain OTM. All groups were measured from edge to edge and then .308" was subtracted. The objective was to shoot the tightest group, and shot placement had no bearing.

DSC_0011-1.jpg

32 shooters participated and the scores were very tight. The winner was very clear with a score of .092", but 2nd with a score of .192" all the way to half of the shooters at 16th with a score of .387" made it a very tight race!

DSC_0022.jpg

And congratulations to the winner, Allen Spiker who took home 100 rounds of Desert Tactical Munitions in 308 Winchester.

Thanks to Desert Tactical Arms for the ammo, and to all the shooters who participated.

Yeah, we definitely aren't going to have booth babes because when someone posts that 16 out of 32 shooters shot a group that measured 0.387" or smaller and the only thing us guys see is a binkini, it doesn't help rifle sales. LOL

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Th

Out of a covert, would 178 amax work as well as 175 smk? I want a good all around load. Realistically what kind of range can I expect from 16" accurately? The plan is to get sac to spin me up a 260, 6.5 x47 or creedmoore, or a 243. I am undecided. I like the 6.5x47 from what i have read but brass and dies seems a little higher plus buying different primers.
