Covert came today from eurooptic, they were out of monopods said they will send it when it comes in . Waiting on end cap for shark. Will post pics when all together.

I anyone else have atlas bipod on covert? Mine is a little loose, I have the nut tightened down and it's super hard to throw the lever now to get it off. It fit great on my ai rail.

I have no idea if anyone has done testing with the subsonic 510 in ballistic gel.....

Guys who are shooting the 12.7 X 48 (as any setup not made or sold by jd jones is known) are using pretty much any projectiles that will fit the US .50 BMG or any other .510 diameter projos. The round will spit out a 650Gr API at up to 1300fps though they are normally fired at under 1100fps for subsonic use. As noted there are guys shooting AMAX and other specialty .510 bullets. I know Lehigh in Pennsylvania makes some neat stuff for subsonic use that include a smaller cal projo inside to help with expansion. I have loaded 300 and 450gr Barnes flat soft point bullets and have been working some loads up for them to hunt with. So far I've got the 450s's up to about 2000fps with room still left in the case.
The round is made from .338 Lapua Mag brass shortened and necked to take the .510 projo. This means any SRS or Covert can be setup by swapping the barrel and using the .338 LM bolt. I've not worked out mags yet as the shoulder retention feature on the DT mags makes them unuseable for the 510 with the longer BMG bullets. Using the 450 and 300 gr Barnes bullets the mag will work and the round will feed. Its on the project list to come up with something to feed the longer bullets. This round does single feed much better than the others due to its size. Brass is not simple to make but it is doable. It lasts a long time so the cost evens out in the long run. I've got cases I've fired over 20 times and have never had crack. It is a neat round to shoot with a variety of reactive projos like the API, APIT, Tracers, Incendiary, and even the spotter/tracer if the throat is reamed for it. 50 cal tracers burn a long time and its neat to see trajectories in real time rather than just looking at graphs.

I have a DTA SRS I've not shot yet... Curious to hear how the DTA ammo in.338LM (300gr.) or the .308(175gr.) performs from the factory vs. hand loads in the SRS. THX.

I tested the 300gr .338LM for an article against a number of factory loads and my own handloads. It's definitely good to go, performing similar to Lapua factory ammo. I personally have preferred the 250 Scenar in my 26" barrel and generally run them hotter than most factory loads, but your mileage may vary.

.308 - 200gn has 389ft-lbs @ 300y
.338 - 230gn has 461ft-lbs @ 300y
.510 - 680gn has 1262ft-lbs @ 300y

That's a 273% increase over the .338.

I believe there is 300 grain subsonic 338lm which would bridge the gal a bit closer.

Trajectory is an important factor for subsonic ammo too because the amount of adjustment required is significantlylore than standard ammo once past 100 yards.

The 510 does offer more energy than even the 300gr .338 bullet at all ranges if they are both subsonic. With good bullets the trajectory will be very similar for both. The big thing with subsonics is that bullet diameter makes a huge difference in energy delivered. Friends hunting with 300 whispers have noted that the deer go down quicker with 44mag subs and they seem to find the bullets most of the time. With the 220gr .30 cal slugs they never find the bullet as they tend to overpenetrate. That means energy wasted. The difference may not be a big deal however as dead is dead and the snack stix I'm eating tell the tale....(buddy used a 300whisper on a deer and gave me some snack stix)
Just like with all the other cals available to us we find there is a lot of overlap and we choose what we want for our own reasons. Its not always logical but some guys will swear that brand x is more effective than brand y. You must choose for yourself....
I like the 510 because I can get tracers and API that do things we can see like trace or flash on target. On the other hand I've also got a .338BR which uses a much smaller case than the Lapua mag but the same bullets. Its intent is subsonic 300gr quiet shooting. So there you have it....I like both of them along with the 6.5 X 47 which is waiting for brass to come in and of course the .338 Lapua Mag.
These cal choices are one of the main reasons I bought the SRS and it has worked out fantastic. I only needed one expensive (for me) scope, one rifle, one cheekweld, one trigger and I can choose any of 4 useful cals to shoot. All suppressed of course.....
Like Nick noted the trajectory on these subs is pretty rainbow like. I've found that we can shoot the .510 at 600-800 yds and its pretty easy to hit once you've worked out the ranging. The arc means your range estimates must be pretty right on. Once you're out past 200yds things drop pretty fast though we've fired .50 cal tracers out over 1000yds and they're still going. This is one reason the .338 lapua is so nice. Its much flatter shooting and with the can its pretty quiet too.


Hope that gives at least a few reasons you might like.

Agreed the .338 has a 300gn bullet; there are also 750+ .510 bullets that will extend that gap back out. I was using Lehigh bullets as the baseline since they have the expandable SS hunting rounds, and that is what I prefer to SS hunt with.

As for trajectory the .510 beat the .338 at range due to higher BC.
300 scenar = 345" drop / 576ft-lbs @ 500y
750 amax = 338" drop / 1503ft-lbs @ 500y

Unless it overpenetrates, I would expect better wound ballistics from yaw and tumble with the .50 BMG projectile. That said, it is challenging to select a ½" tunnel through the body that isn't fatal.

Exactly - shooting subs at extended distance require MUCH more precision with your range estimation as Danger Space values rapidly shrink. In fact, I would think taking the 12.7x48mm to 1000 yards would give you a danger space of less than 5 yards. That's something 11Cs wouldn't mind

The SRS has been out for a few years and the team at DTA has done a great job on the rifle.

The rifle has it's pros and cons, but it is well built and in my experience had provided great accuracy and reliability.

I would be happy to help you with any specific questions you may have on the rifle.

For whomever said there were "bugs" that needed to be worked out with the DTA, I guess we are still waiting for an answer.

I am admittedly a newbie to long range bolt guns but outside of a bullpup not being comfortable for some, I can't find anything wrong with this system. YMMV.

Actually, I had a problem with mine but I hesitate in even mentioning it because they took care of it so quickly and it is working well now. The bolt face has a piece of metal that retains the firing pin, and that came loose. DTA said it was a defective batch and they solved the problem already and I believe them.

I had the same issue with my bolt face and they have been quick to respond to the issue - DTA has great customer service.

Did some work up with covet the past few days and thought I would share. Maybe it's too much info or not enough. If it helps great, if not sorry.

Dta covert with 16" 1-8 twist with shark suppressor
Lapua brass, fed 210 primers, varget for propellant

5 shot averages
155 amax 46 gr. 2558 fps
155 scenar 46.5 gr. 2602 fps
Both of these loads were one big hole at 100 yd.
@ 250 yd. with can on they were smaller than 3" sorry but I don't get into the math to figure the numbers and all. I worked up in .5 increments starting with 44.5 and picked the best group @ 100 yd. for the chrono and 250 yd test.

168 amax 44.5 gr. 2491 fps
175 smk 44.5 gr. 2441 fps
Both of these loads were tight at 100 yd but at 250 yd. they weren't as impressive, maybe I need to work up a little more. I might try 45.5 later, I did at 100 but the group wasn't as nice.
I have only been shooting over 100 yards for a little over a year now. Several of my groups at 250 have 3 shots inside a 1" square with a flier or 2. I think it's me trying to get them all in.

As far as subs go,
180 Sierra rn 10 gr. trailboss 1040 fps
220 Sierra rn 12 gr, trailboss 978 fps
190 smk 11 gr. trailboss 1060
I have some 208 amax ordered to try.

Later I will see how they group at 100

I am considering a 260 or x47 barrel. Been reading on both for most of the year. I have about talked myself into 260 due to availability of brass. Now to decide on a factory conversion or a sac barrel.

Well, I finished reading all 61 pages of this thread. It's been both informative, and also expensive! After getting to actually handle one the other day, I'm sold on DTA! I'm getting a 22" SRS in 308 from George Talia @ Gunslingers!

Now, for a question. I'm thinking about running a Vortex Razor 5-20x on this, and I know that DTA no longer makes a 35mm mount. What is the next best option? Spuhr? Anyone running a Razor with a suggestion?

I've had a hard time getting my 16" to shoot well (though I've been focusing on heavier bullets).

Despite some requests here, currently Spuhr only makes mounts for 30 and 34mm tubes. Fine mounts.
