Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Th

Great idea, as I am not too far away from picking one of these up as well.

One question though for those with the .308 conversion. How far out does the barrell extend past the rail? Any reason to be concerned if a suppressor and rail would conflict with each other? (Specifically looking to run a Shark on it)

Plenty of room for a thread on. On the covert.

Obvious choice for accuracy would be the desert tech ammo because they guarantee it’ll shoot half inch.
For practice ammo I run Hornady American gunner 140gr bthp. For cheap bulk ammo (200 round cans) it’s great (shoots half inch groups for me) and I shoot it out to 800m weekly. There’s a recent thread about that ammo on here and pretty much everyone has good things to say about it.
I also love this ammo. Usually shoot the 147 eldms, and I use bartlein barrel, but The DT barrels honestly seem to shoot the same in my experience.

What is everyone using to change barrels? Are you using the Desert Tech torque wrench or another brand

I bought the Desert Tech maintenance kit at the same time I bought my chassis. It is a really nice kit. However, if I were shopping now I'd have to give a hard look at the Borka kit. I believe a new kit was released recently. Very nice stuff and as mentioned @kortik is good dude.

i've used the Borka kit for years. @kortik makes them. He's a great guy and obviously supports the Hide

Thanks. I ordered a new and improved Borka Field Kit. It will work well with my bikes, too.

I changed the barrel kit it on my SRS A1 twice today and the second time I heard a squeaking or a clicking sound when the bolts were close to final torque. The barrel kit has been used but the chassis was brand new and not shot before. Is it something to worry about? It didn't make those sounds the first time I installed the barrel kit.

The screws are probably dry. Mine did it when new. I took the skins off and put grease on them.

Clamping force is increased for a given torque by lubricating the fastener but it hasn't caused me any issues

is anyone aware of a backpack style pack that will fully encompass a covert w/ 16.5 bbl w/ brake?

Price is steep but it's otherwise perfect. I ride the hog to the range some days.

I'm thinking about getting my new barrel cerakoted. Have any of you found which flat dark earth color matches the DT skins well? I had no idea there were so many variations until I started to look.

I think the A1’s were pretty uniformly magpul FDE, but the A2’s have different shades of FDE between the coated metal and skins.

I've been shooting 338 Lapua since I got the rifle in 2010. I've worn out one barrel already. I'm now running one I built from a Lothar Walther blank at 30".
I've not fired any factory stuff so no info there. I've been reloading for many years though. I would suggest you start with some basic load data and work up a load for your rifle. What works in mine may not work in yours and the factory barrels may have changed over 9 years of production. It doesn't take a lot to make things different. I've worked up some loads with the 250gr Sierra Matchkings in Lapua brass and Federal 210 match primers (not magnum) with Reloader 33 starting at 99gr to get 2950 fps in my 30" barrel. My factory barrel at 26" would be a little slower. Your barrel will likely be different too so pick a powder, bullet, brass and start at the recommended start load. Work your way up. Have a look at the reloading for long range posts to learn a bit more about ladder tests and other details to help you work your loads up. Seating depths can affect a lot of things too. Just copying a load from someone else may not be your best bet.......

After some advice here. I had only one calibre up until recently (6.5cm) and just purchased a 338 conversion second hand - factory barrel etc etc. It had barely been used. I pulled my 6.5 barrel out with no issues - although I did notice the 4 side screws were very loose. I put the 338 barrel in - realised I had put it in the wrong way up... and then couldnt get it out! It was STUCK. No screws done up, no lock on etc. I managed to pull the 338 barrel out, with a fair bit of force. I put the 6.5 barrel back in with no issues, then tried to put the 338 in, which would not go in, and I didn't want to force it. Has anyone else had issues with barrels getting stuck, or not fitting?

The only time I've had an issue with my barrels has been when they were cerakoted. Sometimes the coating adds just enough to the diameter of the barrel that it causes seating difficulty until it gets worn enough to slide in and out.

I called ES Tactical today to confirm that my dealer had sent his information to them since ES has said it would be about 3 weeks from order to shipping. My dealer had not sent his info but Eric is in the hospital getting a kidney stone removed and my rifle would be about 3 more weeks.

I really need my new toy to fondle.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread - this has to be the best resource for the SRS platform, bar none. I never ever thought I'd be an owner of one of these, but the SRS A1 liquidation that occurred mid-summer was too much to resist, even for a miser like me. No regrets. Doubt I'll have much useful information to contribute here any time soon, but at least I know where to go when I do, thanks to y'all.

I did try and post a pretty thorough Desert Tech resource list (everything from retailers, custom work and barrels, hard to find parts and tools, misc accessories, etc.) here yesterday, but maybe it violated a forum rule for postings?

I'm still trying to figure out how to do all the fancy stuff on here. There's a few other hints and tricks I'd like to put in there, i.e. the washer trick for the sticky magazines, etc.

Glad it's useful though. I'll poke around some more and see if I can figure out the "resource" thing.

Update 10/27/2019 - posted in the resources section.
