So for a least 5 years, I have been trying to find a Cold-War Era Civil Defense Air Raid Siren that had an audible radius of at least 10 miles.

Well, bi%$-h-ass snobby neighbors... I just got one. Not one of the Hemi-powered Chrysler units, but a 3HP Federal Electric that will alert the neighborhood to inbound nukes (or annoy the neighbors when they blow off fireworks at midnight)... and it's mine, all mine!

Hot damn.... This is going to be a great project to refurbish and get it working right. Combined with my Navy Aldis lamp (you can jack a deer a mile away with it)... gonna make Schloss Nitrocellulose like an Atomic-age disco palace!

I am, literally, cackling!

Cheers,

Sirhr

I have a bunch of douch-bag neighbors who spend the summer blowing off fireworks at 11 PM all summer because they have money to burn.

So when they start off fireworks, I am going to turn on the Air Raid Siren until the fireworks stop... and then the next morning at 6am. i will publish an ad in the paper announcing this fact...

Bring it on, bitches!

Cheers,

Sihrr

I may have to get one of those! We have the same problem in the summer. Lots of folks from down state have cabins on the lake where I live. We don't have a fulltime cop, so these asswipes behave as if there are no laws and if there were, they don't apply to them. Nothing like fireworks and loud parties during the week when a guy has to get up early for work...

Hemi? Yeah, let me know when you get serious about sirens!

Lion King Defender, the loudest siren ever sold at 130dB @ 35m. 220hp Cummins and it's on wheels. Looks even cooler in camo! Imagine driving this fucker down the street?

Seriously though, that's cool as shit Sirhr --you always have the coolest toys! If I'd known you were looking I'd have said check N. Alabama. Between Redstone arsenal and tornadoes and Brown's Ferry, they got it covered. All different types too and probably one of those Chrysler units --wouldn't surprise me.

I'd say you're gonna get the cops called on you but.........

Curious how this is going to go down. What's the closest .mil base? You think they'll be able to hear it? Of course, nobody there is going to be old enough to know what it is :)

You scare me sir!;)

You remind me of the guy I was talking to a couple of years ago, we were standing next to his Dodge truck and he goes “check this out”, he then proceeds to remotely actuate the horn, which was from a diesel locomotive.

I already sent them a picture... they want to come up when I test it. Nearest base is Camp Johnson and the Underhill firing range. I can hear their 50s all the time. They will be able to hear this!

Freedom!

That's why I mostly wear sweatpants. In case I shit myself when something like that happens I can get down the road a ways before anyone notices.o_Oo_O...?

YouTube video, or it didn’t happen.......... ;)

OBTW........have you considered putting a VFD on it ? You could make it sing Jingle Bells or Ride of the Valkyries at 3 AM with very little effort. Call me, I’ll be happy to help !.........:LOL::LOL:

Let me get it restored first... variable freq. hummmmmm....

Cheers, Sirhr

Imwhen everyone was putting train horns in their trucks and cars to scare the living hell out of you I say a guy mount a horn from a navy destroyer in the back of his truck. That mofo was so damn load and deep it would set car alarms off blocks away. No I realize that’s some shit Sirhr would do.

You got no Top-Hat on your CD Siren .
If it similar or a ( Federal model T-5 ) . .go to about ( 11:50 ) of this Vid. ... and your neighbors will be loving  .. on this .

.

The Thunderbolt at 18:18 is the one I have seen before on some restoration show.

The Thunderbolt is cool as hell.

Truth be told though the sound of any of them, even though Ive never been warned by one, gets me on edge.

Sirhr, I am now finally JEALOUS! There was one of these big Civil Defense rotating horns near my house next to my High School, T.C. Williams, the one in the movie Remember the Titans, (the movie is mostly bullshit, I was there, '72 to '74 and knew Coach Herman Boone). When that Monster went off, not only did everyone literally jump 3 feet off the ground, every dog in the neighborhood just howled long after it turned off. Ahh, those were the days. Duck, and Cover!

Thanks for the memories, all the best!

I bought a hand crank siren a while back specifically to screw with a few ass hats in my former neighborhood. It was wonderful! First time I used it was on the first Monday of the month when they test the system here so they would think it was official. From there I would use it at arbitrary times just to piss them off.

That is brilliant! Yup, once a month at a certain time. So when I run it off at random times, it will screw with everyone. I love it!

This thread, I just love it!
A little envious. Makes me wish I had shitty neighbors to bond closer with my new siren.
Spotlights?
Timer?
Turn it on for a few seconds everyday at high noon so the workers know when it’s time to break for lunch like the little town my in-laws live in. Kind of an old tradition there.

We had a great tradition where the center of town fire station would blow the horn at 0715 and 1915.

Heard almost every day of my life up until about 10 years ago.

Guess fewer people were getting up prior to 0715 so they stopped it.

It was the signal for a snow day. I loved it as a kid when the firefighter running it got to get let loose and would have the thing blow for a straight five or ten minutes. Every kid in town knew it was going to be a good day.
