Good grief, don't wait for a "newbie day" to get out and shoot. Look at the schedules and get your ass to the range. There will always be someone willing to help you along if you have any questions. Just remember ..... everybody has a first day.

I spoke with a guy who frequents Rayners and I've been checking the schedules there and at tvp but summer is my busy season at work so it's tough to get away.

If you want an "open range day" you'll have to call either Tom Sarver for TVP or Tom Rayner for Rayner's to make sure nothing else is going on. The scheduled matches are an open invite to just show up. Both ranges have matches scheduled that weekend, so feel free to join in on the fun. I'll be at Rayner's on the 24th, so if you make it look me up and introduce yourself.

Re: OHIO

Columbus here, I just moved back and have been shooting at tvp regularly, anyone who whats to car pool out pm me and we can hook up and drive out. It is a great group of regulars.

Re: OHIO

Hey guys, new here. I live in Columbus, and just went down to Deer Creek shooting range to sight in my new Savage Axis .223. At 100 yds, the first shot was 3 o'clock nearly dead center and the next 2 were at 6 o'clock in the black. Out of 50 shots all but a handful were in the black. I need to work on my technique or get another benchrest as I can see my heartbeat in the scope. I really like the rifle, it's more accurate than I can be. I also have a Savage 10FP that I need to get sighted in. Looking at going down to Rayners range. I would like to shoot out to 500 yds as I haven't shot that far out since my Marine Corps days about 35 years or so ago. May not be able to make it out on the weekend to shoot at Rayner's so I'll try and make it sometime during the week. Just looking forward to getting back into shooting.

Re: OHIO

Just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself.

My name is Anthony, Saturday night I will be flying into Pittsburgh, and staying in Salem for the four years or so for college.

Does anybody know a decent place to shoot in the area?

Re: OHIO

In the South Dayton area here and I'm interested in getting into long range precision shooting. I have a Remington 700 308 ADL that is being upgraded piece by piece.

I am also into handguns. I have 2 Springfield XDms, a 40 and a 9, plus an AR-15 flat top carbine. In addition my wife has an XD sub-compact in 9mm and a 20ga Sears shotgun that looks like a Remington 870 copy. I occasionally shoot in the Tactical League at Sim Trainer (more in the winter than summer) and I am also an NRA Pistol instructor.

I mostly shoot the 308 at Spring Valley, but I have had it up at Miami Valley Shooting Grounds to test loads on the chronograph. I have replaced the original canoe paddle stock with a tactical stock and the Cabelas Alpha Scope with a Bushnell 3200 Tactical Mil-Dot. I've been doing my own hand loads for it and I've shot sub 1" MOA at 100 yards. I have a Krieger barrel ordered for it that should be here in about 8 weeks or so. When that comes in I'll get the action blueprinted when the barrel is fitted.

Current load is 168gr Amax in Winchester cases, 44.0gr Varget and Winchester primers. Shoots 2648fps with an SD of 11.25. However, I just loaded some 175 SMKs with everything else being the same and got 2620 fps and an SD of 4fps. The 5 round group was a sub 1" MOA. I think I found a new load. Plus I just got in 100 Lapua 308 cases that I plan to load soon.

I am interested in doing some longer range shooting than 100 yards. Middletown has a 200 yard range and I think there is a 600 range near Batavia. Other than that - not many choices on where to go.

Re: OHIO

Since you are from columbus check out the range at West Jefferson they go out a 1000 yards. Send me a message I have a place to shoot. I am 50 min south of columbus.

Re: OHIO

I just looked last night and seen where big darby was closed. But I knew some guys who shot there a few weeks ago. I have a few places to shoot. I have a range that is setup to 400. And have a place we can go out 600 to 700 yards. It not a TVP, but we can shoot all we want.

Re: OHIO

To my knowledge there is no range is west jeff out to 1000 yards. If you're referring to Big Darby, they only go out to 300 unless they've done some serious revamping. The last I knew Battelle slapped them with a cease fire injunction accusing bullets of escaping the range.

Re: OHIO

I was a member of the Big Darby Creek Shooting Range and know the onwer - they are in fact out of business as a gun range. They have opened a gun store in W. Jefferson called West Jeff Outfitters.

Re: OHIO

Hi all,
I have not posed much but am in the Dayton area. There is not a lot of long range going on here and am interested in getting out to either Thunder valley or Ryerson's. I am definitely a noob to the long range stuff but if anyone is interested in going let me know.
