Im in Iraq as of right now will be back this coming summer in time for some good shooting.. Most of my friends are pansies and dont shoot. So im always looking to meet some new people and to get out and shoot some shit.

West side of OH here, don't forget there will be shooting at Rayners Range out to 900 yards every month starting in Feb. It's a lil bit below Zanesville. A fun time for sure and always challenging.

I have wanted to try Big Darby for a while now and just havent got around to it, seems like work just takes up to much of my time anymore, last time I talked to a person from out there they said they were going to open up a gunshop out there.

What all do you guys shoot? When Im back I will have my .22 trainer and my Rem. .308.... Pretty new to haveing to make wind calls and adjustments with scopes...done it plenty of times with iron sights and an M-16. So if anyone is willing to work with me on that im sure its not rocket science..That would be great. Thanks

I shoot just about everything...but with the cost of ammo lately(even though its leveling off) its more economical to shoot rimfire, Im a big fan of the CZ rimfires myself.

Yeah the rim fire was what I was going to use to do most of the learning on since it is more economical to shoot... and just transfer over what i learn about making adjustments to shooting the Rem 700 im putting together. Im gonna either get a little savage MKII or a Ruger Target Tactical 10/22 to use as a little trainer. Practical for what im useing it for and still fun and cheap to shoot.

up in cleveland here. but will be shooting down at tv and rayners hopefully this coming season. would love to stretch all my rifles legs, they rarely see anything past 100. not really any long distance ranges up here (that i know of.

if anyone has a farm/private land or anything. id be more then happy to do some varmint shootin

Ive heard they can be quite the tack driver with a couple mods....and a good shooter... every one I talked to seems to be happy with it..so thats a plus.

Bought my 700VS in 223 down at Barnes by the way maybe 10 years ago, I noticed some sort of Gunshop/outdoor store going south out of town a couple weeks ago on the left side, never noticed it before you have any idea what it is or what its like in there??

Great starter. Which model SPS did you get. First thing I would do would be the following all in order.
1. Go shoot it and get a baseline.
2. Get a better stock.
3. Bed the action in the new stock using devcon or similar.
4. Either replace or lighten the trigger. (you can lighten it yourself)
5. Work on load development.

I have a crono if you want help with load dev or changing out stocks and lightening your trigger.

Smallmouth if your talking about heading toward columbus on 33 its ohio valley outdoors.... A pretty nice place mainly geared towards hunters....but they have like a 23 bay indoor range that I think you can shoot anything up to 30-06.

Sounds good. Dont forget about the Jewell Triggers as well. Also, take a look at the new Falcon Menace 5-25x50 in mil/mil.

Im actually getting that one for my .22 i believe so i will have it as a back up... Yeah ive thought about jewell...but ive heard in a more tactical field enviroment they have mixed reviews on how well they hold up. The AICS requires no bedding correct...cause it has the metal bedding already built in.

bad part about ohio valley is it's only 50' range good for pistol, shotgun, and fighting carbines. militant83 my range isn't far from lancaster and we have a 25,50,75,100,200, and 300. pm me maybe we can meet up

Mscott, yeah not bad right should get me where i need to be for awhile besides some minor stuff...which im hoping when I start going to gunsmith school when i get back I can do some of my own work on it at the school.

I reload. I bought a Lee press which is somewhat of a progressive press. Its nice and quick for anything where your not too worried about extreme precise loads. (ex: AR, pistol, etc. )

I hand measure each of my loads for the 308 since I am going for accuracy. I would suggest getting a press that not only meets your current needs but also any future needs you may think you will have. Being able to reload faster is always a plug for the cartridges you are not worried about as much. I would suggest getting your calipers, and deburing tools, and case trimmers separately so that you can pick which ones you like more and best meets your needs.


I will have to get you the exact model later tonight back at my hotel. Im in Mumbai India right now and my connection is horrible.

Lee has a deal on their site a kit for $157...I also found dillon precision a little more expensive...and few more other brands....Not too sure if I want to buy all my own re-loading equipment right now...or just chip in on materials with someone that loads and learn and help them out.

I know a lot of people get by with it, but I'll not likely buy any more LEE equipment. I like their dies, but that is it. I've owned some LEE stuff and I think you get what you pay for. I've had thoughts of buying a Forster Coax, but decided to set up one of my Hornady progressives for most of the work. A single stage or turret press from and of the well known names will be fine. I like my Hornady balance beam scale bettter than digital scales. I just looked over at Midway and none of the kits they have have everything, so I'd say pick one from RCBS, Hornady, or Lyman and go from there.

How often do you have to shoot to make reloading worth it...or should I say how much do you shoot to have it save money vs. just going to the store and picking up a couple boxes. Or do some people do it to try to produce a better round for their needs?

Reloading doesn't really save you money, it just allows you to shoot more. Hard to explain, but that's the way it is. There are lots of good factory choices for the .308 and .223, but it is still less money per shot to load your own and you can get exactly what you want.
I'd stick with a single stage for starters. I have a LNL and an old Projector (earlier model of LNL) progressives set up for pistol and AR15 ammo. I use a Lyman Orange Crusher I bought new over 20 years ago for the precision rifle ammo, but it's about in need of being replaced. Personally I like the Hornady stuff best overall. Beyond the basic kit you'll need a set of calipers, case trimmer, ammo boxes, set of shell holders, and probably a few other things I can't think of at the moment. A sturdy workbench is also as important as anything.

Ive looked at the lyman turret press and read lots of reviews on them and for what comes in the expert kit for the price i think it fits my budget better. There wasnt a bad review about them. How many times can you reload a casing? How many loads roughly when loading .308 do you get out of 1lb of powder? I was looking at the turret kits on midway seemed to be fairly priced.

7000 grains in a pound of powder. Brass life varies, but you should get several loads from each one. I've never owned a turret press, but some guys like them. I'm concerned about the mechanism getting loose over time. The Hornady LNL with the bushings is probably just as fast. You'll also need a case tumbler.

So To keep it as simple as possible and get the best results for a beginner the single stage press is the best option and easier on the budget? And out of a lb of powder your getting about 40-50 charges? Are there any places in central ohio to get powder and various supplies or do you have to order online?
Is the hand primer the way to go for installing the primers?

I figured you dont really save money by reloading you just produce more for the money so you are able to shoot more. But I would think when comparing 100 store bought .308 rounds to 100 reloaded .308 rounds that there is a savings of atleast a little bit...But you would also have to consider how valuable your time is also....re-loading seems to be a pretty time consuming process.

I more then paid for my reloading setup in the first 100-200 rounds of match 308 I loaded vs buying it. I mean hell, its over $40 a box to buy match rounds in a store and at the time I calculated my reloading cost around 39-42 cents a round. As far as brass life goes, you can get tons of life out of your brass as long as you treat it right. The world record holder for best 5 shot group at 1000 yards had 52 firings on his lapua brass but he also annealed his brass after each firing and generally was only bumping the shoulders a few thousandths.

I have at least 10-15 firings on some of my brass. Consistancy is key when it comes to case prep for good groups. Keep track of your number of firings on the brass, time between trimming, time between annealing, etc. I just purchased 200 new win cases a few months ago and now all of my previous brass is being used for subsonics to run through my suppressor.

I'd say you are looking at more like 150 rounds per pound of powder. 7000 divided by 46(typical max charge for .308) give you 152 loads. Powder is best bought locally if you can find it or double up an order with a buddy to save on shipping charges. I like the hand primer tool. The only primers inserted on a press for me are pistol rounds loaded progressively. Figuring your ammo by the hundred makes it easier. Once the brass is bought it doesn't really count because it lasts for quite a while. Lapua is best, but Winchester is perfectly fine. I'd say figure per 100: $15 for powder, $4 for primers, $30 for bullets and you get $49 for 5 20 round boxes of ammo loaded with matchkings. What does Federal GMM sell for if you can get it? Those figures can be a lot less when you buy 8# of powder, 1,000 primers, and bullets in quantity of 500. Don't worry about the time you spend loading. If you do that you need to figure in the time spent cleaning your gun into it's cost. It's a hobby ... it doesn't have to make sense. I shot over 1k rifle rounds this year when you throw my AR15 in the mix used for 3 gunning. I doubt I would have shot nearly as much without loading my own.

You can get your powder and primers at Barnes, you can save your once fired brass or order it online along with your bullets, its almost always cheaper to buy that stuff online,your dies will be better off bought online to, even though every once in a while you can find dies used in a local shop or in classifieds on the net, I try if possible to buy stuff when its on sale from places like Midway, Midsouth, Natchezz etc.

Smallmouth I forgot to answer your question a few replies back the store you are talking about towards logan Is an older outdoors store...I have never been in it. But they claim to have a indoor archery range so im guessing they are more geared toward archery. You usually see a few 4-wheelers for sale out front too.

Ok I knew it wouldnt take long lets talk dies. Do you need a neck size die set that includes a special sizing die with decapping stem and expander button and a standard bullet seating die or a 2 die set that Set consists of a full length resizing die with decapping stem and neck expanding button and a bullet seating die.
Headspacing gauge is it something to get?
Does the $900-$1000 price range sound about right for a complete set up. priced based on RCBS, Hornady, and Lyman set ups

You can get a RCBS Rockchucker for around 300(a little less if on sale) dies will go roughly $25-30 for standard rifle dies and around 40 for handgun dies, the rockchucker setup has everything you need.
