My Tikka based 6.5X47 all of a sudden started shooting some inconsistent groups. My first worry was the barrel has gone south as I have about 1500 rounds down the tube. I have heard too many different stories of the barrel life of this caliber, anywhere from 1k to 3k? I talked to a guru named Don Trevor in New Mexico and he felt using the load I was shooting (34.7gr Varget pushing a 130 Berger VLD) that I should get at least a 2500 round life out of my 29” Med Palma Krieger tube.

He asked how I clean the barrel, I told him I only use a jag, patches and Hoppes # 9 to clean carbon every time I shoot. I use Boretechs CU cooper remover about every 100 rounds or so. He said I most likely have carbon build up that is causing my woes. He recommended saturating the tube with HOPPEs # 9 and running a bronze brush from chamber to muzzle about 15 times they run patches until clean.
I did this and the rife came back in to spec @ 100 yards around .5-.75MOA. I shot a 1K Palma match, did ok as far as total score but was disappointed in my number of Xs. I went to my 300 yard range and the rifle was back to shooting around 1-1.5 MOA, both at 300 and 100 yards. I went home and took apart the action from the stock and found the recoil lug fairly wet as well as some moisture under the action., I assume the liquid was Hoppes(yes I use a bore guide) it’s just I was really soaking the patches and brush.
Anyhow I dried it all up and re-torqued the stock to the action. I am going to shoot the rifle this afternoon. I hope the Hoppes under the lug and action was the cause of my woes? What do you guys think.

I don't think it was the oil. However, the fact the gun shot better after being cleaned might indicate that it needs even more cleaning to get back to it's original state.

I doubt your barrel is done at so few rounds, especially with such a light load. However, I doubt a little oil would cause anything crazy with your lug.

I too think you may consider changing your cleaning regime, but I don't think the bronze brush is the key.

Here's the process that has given me the best results:

Soaked patch with carbon cleaner. I usually use Boretech. Then I run a dry patch down it. Do this about half a dozen times and call it a day.

Every few hundred rounds I'll get the copper out using the same process with Sweets 762 after the carbon treatment. I've found the brushes don't really do that much for me, but I use nylon when I do anymore because they aren't going to hurt the barrel.

I believe Frank Green posted last week about his cleaning method....and he's the go to guy for barrels.

ETA: I've found my rifles need about half a dozen or so rounds before they start to settle back in after a cleaning. I avoid cleaning just for that reason. Dirty barrels shoot better for me than freshly cleaned ones. Seems people over-clean more than under-clean.

The method I use to remove carbon is to use two wet patches of carbon killer (pick your poison), a minute or two soak followed by a dry patch or two, another wet patch followed by a soaked bronze brush for ten strokes. After about 5 to 10 minutes dry patch until clean and condition with Kroil. Until I switched from nylon to the bronze brushes, I wasn't getting the carbon ring very good. Btw, the Kroil keeps my poi shift to a minimum for the first 5 rnds or so. I know it goes against the sentiments of the more experienced and knowledgeable crew here, but it seems to work for me.

Don't know if you do, but always make sure you have the gun tilted forward quite a bit (25 - 30 degrees?) when you clean. Should keep the oil backing onto sitting on the action screws.
