painting the barreled action on my model 700...I think i have decided on using Brownells Aluma Hide II. my question is have any of yall used this product? what was your result, how did you prepare the weapon (i dont have access to a sand blasting set up.) how close was the color to true color they say? other question. how did you protect areas not to paint, ie inside action

thanks

Re: ok...so i am seriously thinking of

I just shoot mine with Krylon or Rustoleum flat rattle-can paint. To prepare the metal I just hang the barreled action in the shed and spray it down with automotive brake cleaner or carb cleaner. That removes any oils or solvents. Plug the muzzle with one of those squishy ear-plugs, remove the trigger and mask anything else you don't want painted (like the bolt channel and chamber) and spray away! I also mask off the bottom of the receiver where it meets the bedding. I'm against sand-blasting because it messes up the "original" finish on the rifle. Paint will always come back off if you want. If it scratches off just touch it up.
Back in the day we painted our rifles based on the terrain and environment we would be working in. Our rifles often had many coats of paint on them. FWIW.

I dont plan on selling any of my rifles, this particluar model 700 has just always had a problem with devloping rust spots under the stock. and i want some coating to protect it. what did you use to mask the bolt channels with, and what color do you suggest? dont want too flamboyant or terribly tacticool. did you stuff a paper towell in there? and also on the ejection port did you mask the sides of it, or just paint the sides...

I just painted my rifle with AH II, just use a good degreaser, the Brownells TCE degreaser works good. And make sure you give it a full week to cure.

The last rifle I painted was my 5R because I hated the "stainless" color. I masked the ejection port from the inside by slipping a rolled wide piece of masking tape in the back of the receiver with the sticky side out and pushing it against the inside with a shotgun swab. I also masked the rear that way. The important thing is to NOT paint anything that is touched by the bolt. On the rear of the receiver you can paint the area around where the action screw shows but be careful not to paint just forward of that area where the bolt rides. I also didn't remove the trigger on that one. I just loosly covered it with masking tape. I will say the first place paint scratched off was the ejection port ledge. Right where you circled. The color is your call!

damn that looks really nice...i like it. is that the OD on it? i think that would look good in a standard military grey HSprecision stock. either that or the parkerized color. any body done that? also, how does their silver look?

This assesment is right on the money!

harbor freight. local cemetary headstone places. local yellow pages to see if you have a place, we had one for 6 months, he closed. did anything you could get in there. people die everyday, call a headstone place or buy from harbor freight if you are going to use it more than once. i always thought an old shower stall would make a nice cabinet. or HF has a small cabinet too

Acetone works good as a degreaser, I used AH II on a VEPR that I have and compared to my .22 that I painted with Rustoleum it is a much thicker and harder coat. Also stands up to cleaning better. Started with OD, then Coyote Tan, and finished with just a touch of black. takes a long time to set up, but IMO it is a good finish.

Hey oneshot I am sorry to say that rifle no longer has the paint on it. This is what it looks like today:

I gotta say it looks better now! I really miss that rifle. FYI... That was the first rifle I ever owned that was NEW when I bought it. Hope you're enjoying it as much as I did.
