I purchased a box of 200+ 30-06 brass from an estate sale and the head stamps were all from 1942, 1943, and 1944. Majority were from the Des Moines Ordnance Plant, some from Lake City, some from Twin Cities, and a couple with just a U on them so these are either Remington, Utah Ordnance, or UMC (Union Metallic Cartridge)...
All were 1x fired, still had the crimps.
I thought about keeping them for the nostalgia but I have enough crap laying around so I processed them to reload. They were pretty brown, 3 hours in the SS tumbler and they came out looking like new.
I wish I had the story behind these, I cant imagine much ammo made during WW2 would have been surplussed out with our GI's shooting it as fast as they could make it... The old fella was a WW2 vet. One could only imagine why he kept these for so long...
I am sure it will give me something to think about when I am pulling the trigger on a case that had not seen powder in 70 years.....
