The story in the link is not the full story. If it weren't for the dog, I'd be really suspicious.

Or, the PD doesn't want people thinking they can shoot a bear, because some assholes will shoot a bear when they don't have to. So this guy gets charged despite it being a legitimate defensive shooting.

Had he left the scene with the gun, no guarantee they would get it back as evidence should something be discovered shortly after the fact. Say toxicology for example. You can't put toothpaste back in once its out. Same thing here. Much easier to dismiss charges and return evidence later than try to collect later.

It may have been the best thing in the view of LE. But if the charges were made and property seized by LE despite them not thinking laws were broken, that is 100% wrong, morally, if not legally.

It says that shitty motel wasn't their first choice. They had already booked a different hotel that was pet friendly. Upon arrival, it turns out the hotel wasn't able to offer them a pet friendly room. The couple ended up leaving to look for a last minute hotel room where their dog would be allowed.

Dogs and bears are a no no, 99% of the time the dog retreats bringing booboo with them back to the person even if the bear has an escape route or not, the dog is seen as a threat. Just a human, animals that have an escape usually do but every animal and every encounter is different

If you consider this “prevailing”, then we have different definitions of the word. Had the bear been killed on the spot, yup. But it wasnt. Were it me, i’d be re-examining my ammo/ carry choice.
