I may be replacing some factory triggers on my Rem 700(s). Anyone had much luck in working-over the original X-Mark Pro triggers? Most folks that I know has opted for aftermarket. I don't shoot competition, but I'd like a reliable, safe, reasonable trigger. ??????

I have 3 40x triggers, one reworked old style 700 trigger (available from Brownells still I believe), and have shot Timney and Rifle Basix on bolt rifles. Really like the Rifle basix that was on a Savage for the money. Easy install and cheaper than having an old 700 trigger worked over.
This stated, I like my triggers to sit around 3.5 lbs and I hate creep. They are heavy enough since my rifles double between hunting and target, but clean and smooth. With that weight, I still get several 10 rd groups around .75 and 5 rnds a good bit under .5. Just lots of practice with the ones I use.

I think it's just plain eaiser to go with something like the Timney or Shilen. Drop it in and forget about it.

Some smiths can work wonders on a stock trigger for about $40. unless you're going to be competing then that kind of trigger job would be well worth it.

I have an xmark in 5r and hate it. My smith and others hav told me that it cannot be made comparable to my teeaked old style remmy that im comparin to. So in process of installin timney.

The 40x on my 700 XCR Compact Tactical is money right out of the box. I don't plan to change a thing.

I have been looking at the Timney for my R700. Most sites say it comes in at 3#, but how easy is it to adjust it down from there, to say 2#?

I had good luck gettin a smith to tune an x mark down to 3 lbs but if i was to do it over I would have gone ahead and bought a jewel. I have jewels in my other three rifles and love the feel of them.

I just picked up my XCR LRT 300WM R700 from my smith getting a Brake installed, and had him do a $60 Trigger tune on my 40x, it was like night and day diffrence, took it to a extremely smooth 2.75lbs and its amazing. He said they can work wonders on 40x, but the new XMark are workable, but no where near as workable as the 40x, he recommended just going a Timney on X-Mark pro's.

Loosen nut, adjust weight set screw to desired setting, tighten lock nut...and enjoy.
I put a Timney in my 700 over the winter and I'll never go back to an x-mark ever again even on new rifles it will be replaced.

My custom has the old Rem trigger group really worked to a 2 1/4# job... no creep over travel and moves a total of 1/16" when pulled. The safety functions and is smoother than alot of after market assemblies I've tried. It only cost $60 but he actually disassembled the entire thing and reworked angles and polished instead of trying to get by with just making adjustments like alot will do. Way cheaper and great work if you find a good smith.

All mine have either the old style Remy or Jewel triggers. The Jewels are probably smoother but more spendy. Pretty hard to beat a old style Remington trigger that is tuned up, very crisp with no creep.

I have a Jewell in my LTR and it is SWEET. No creep, nice and crisp. I'll not be looking for anything else.

Go with the Timney. I got mine about 6 weeks ago and it finally turned out to be the trigger that I have always attempted to tweak my factory triggers into. I love it, especially for the price.

Older 40x is great. The new X-Mark are trash. I started buying Rifle Basix and swapping them out.

i just installed a Timney 510 in my 700 AAC as well, set at 2.5lbs. What a huge difference over the original trigger. I've only been able to play with snap caps so far since i can't get to the range til this weekend, but i already feel a MUCH more consistant break every shot over the x-mark.
i noticed with my X-mark that sometimes i'd have to pull the trigger normall and sometimes it would go off way lighter. I haven't had that happen so far with the timney.

Despite having a Jewell trigger for my rifle, honestly (with his intentions) having smithwork done on his factory setup would be money well spent if he found the right smith. But when money is no issue, get the best. If you can't tell, Jewell is a favorite around here. Timney is another good choice. I haven't had any experience with those others mentioned but I'm sure anyone owning them would be very satisfied.

carefully adjusting your sear and return spring can make your stock trigger very usable, however I have a Jewell and a Timney and I have to say they are great! and I love the ease of adjustment on my jewell! Cant go wrong with a good aftermarket trigger.

We replace the X-Mark on a 700 we bought two years ago with a Timney...it was crap.
But I have to say...I was waiting for a lane at the range a couple of months ago and the owner was trying to sell me a 700 SPS AAC-SD, and kept bugging me to pull the trigger...it was the X-Mark Pro, and I will say, it had a pretty clean break and it was much better than the old X-Mark.

The stock trigger in my remmy is good for a factory trigger. its got a clean break, and no overtravel. It is heavy for precision shooting however.

On a shoestring budget, I would buy a tuned stock older trigger. I have a timney, Jewell, and several old 40 x triggers. The Jewell trigger is amazing as can be expected. I was able to adjust the 40x triggers to the point where most people could not tell the difference between the Jewell and the tuned Remington triggers. That is not to say that there is not a difference.

I called Rifle Basix, ordered a trigger with a custom pull weight, and had it in 48 hrs. I have two. They are awesome. I also love the Jewell in my buddy's wsm tho...
For hunting, how about a set trigger?

Try a Shilen. I have Timneys and professionally adjusted factory triggers, but the Shilens are the best in my opinion.

Had a couple timneys, great, easy to install and adjust, zero issues. Available in flat too if that's your bag, the one I've fired felt great.
For a 2 stage I have a Huber in a gap, great trigger as well, but considerably more expensive and its a very different feel than a single stage.

I bought an older 700 trigger and learned how to tune them myself, got it to break like a glass rod a 3 pounds, no creep or overtravel.
Not very hard to learn and the knowledge gained can serve you well.

This may sound like a dumb question, but my only Remington 700 is the 700P MLR in .338 LM (I am a Winchester guy but they do not make a .338 LM and I got the Remington on a great deal)
My question is how do I know what trigger is in the gun right now. There is no info on the 700P MLR on Remingtons web site and the manual is not specific on the finer points of the rifle. Hell I do not even now what the barrel twist on it is. I figure that there must be some marking or other means to determine which trigger I have. Or should I just put a Timney in it and call it good?
I should point out that the trigger is "OK" but not great, I have no experience with the 40X trigger so I have no real point of reference to compare the trigger in my 700 to other than my Winchester triggers that I feel are much superior to the trigger in my 700.

The older X-mark is not adjustable (which is what I have). Do yourself a favor and don't even dink with it. Order a new trigger. You can't go wrong.
Midway has them on sale right now for the 510 and its cheaper shipping than what you can get from Timney direct.
