Opinions on Steyr SSG PIV (16" barrel)?

Does anyone own or have any experience with the Steyr SSG PIV (the short barreled 16" version with threaded barrel)?

I can't find a lot written on the PIV version (just the longer barreled version PII) so any pros and cons of this specific rifle appreciated! It looks like the barrel is threaded back toward the end of stock and not at end of barrel. What's the reason for this and it is this a good feature?

I shot one in Europe back in the early 90s. It's a good rifle, kind of old school SSG69 - nothing special though. The one you're looking at was probably threaded back for an overbarrel suppressor.

It is an excellent rifle. I have both p2 and p4. The difference between the p2 and p4 are the barrel twist 1:10 in p4, and 1:12 in p2. P4 is the police version with the ability for quick attachable silencer. It is very lite and handy. The treaded barrel you mentioned is correct. It is for the silencer, but because of the barrel is treaded all the way to the stock, you can't use McMillian stock on p4(McMillian stock is too long, about 2'' longer and will overlap the barrel). Both p2 and p4 are accurate enough for me, even though the p4 is 1:10 twist, it still handles 147gr m80 ball, 150gr federal American eagle (red box) very accurate out to 200 yds. The barrels on P2 are not threaded into the receiver, so rebarrel will be a problem. The barrels on P4 are threaded into receiver, any smith that can rebarrel a Remington or savege can easily get the work done.

1:10 twist P4 is designed to shoot heavy subsonic bullet. And what I was tring to say is even the barrel is designed for heavy bullet, it also can handle lighter bullet very well, which is a PLUS.

Got it...thanks. Sounds like an interesting rifle. Looks quite unique too with the stock and double triggers. I'm tempted.

My PII is ridiculously accurate. ......keeping me from building a custom It shoots consistently 1/4MOA to 750 in calm conditions with the right load.

Shot out a SSG M69 and a PII back in the day. Great rifles both. Barrels ton pressed into the receiver with heat and cryo. Used to be you could find 10 round magazines for them, but they were expensive and fragile. The Kahles illuminated scopes were considered state of the art at the time. Blend you right into the German Countryside. Buy it, you will love it.
