I currenly use a sightron Siii 8-32x56 with the 1/4 minute target dot on my 243 to shoot open class. I have been thinking of going with a NF 5.5-22x50 NXS. My question is will I be gaining anything going with the NF? I would like to hear from anybody that has experince with both scopes.

Re: Optics question

Yes in my opinion you are gaining something switching to Nightforce. If this is a dedicated F-class gun I would consider getting the 12-42x56 BR or NXS either will work great

Re: Optics question

I have not used a Sightron, but I do shoot a Night force NSX 5.5 x 22x and I have never taken it off 22X. If was to buy another NF I would still get a NSX but the 12-42 power. This is for dedicated Ftr shooting.

Re: Optics question

I have both a 5.5x22x50 NSX and a 8x32x56 BR model. For f-class, the BR model is much better. The sight picture is clearer and brighter at high magnification by a significant margin and the extra magnification is a definite plus.

Re: Optics question

For F class I'm not sure that you actually gain anything going to a NF. I shoot a NF 8-32BR and I usually leave it on 32 unless I have mirage problems, which is not often even here in the heat in TN.

The NF is heavier than the Sightron, if you need to add a pound it will do that for you.

If you get a NF and you are buying new get a 12-42, you can always dial down. Personally unless I was getting more magnification I'd stay with what I had.

How many points do you think a NF will get you? If it won't improve your score it isn't worth it. The guy next to me who won at the TN regionals here in Oak Ridge a couple of months ago was shooting 190+ with a Savage and a Sightron.

Buy bullets instead.

It wasnt me, but I use a Savage 12 F T/R and a Sightron and do quite well.

Agreed, except with a qualifier added to read" <span style="font-style: italic">"For dedicated F Class, get the highest power you can afford, <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000">provided that the higher magnification does not come at the expense of clarity and resolution.</span></span>"</span> Magnification is worthless without clarity, and all the magnification in the world won't help you see the "X" better if the image is "muddy".

Also agreed. No clarity and/or resolution worries with the Nightforce NXS or BR scopes, they are an excellent choice.

Re: Optics question

I've had these both side by side, recently, and I wouldn't sell my Sightron to go with the lower powered NXS.

Now, if we are talking a designated fclass gun, the NF 12-42 would be worth the look, but you aren't gaining anything going from your 8-32 SIII to a 5.5-22 NXS.

I'm also shooting my SIII on top of a Savage

Re: Optics question

My question would be "have you lost points due to your optic"?

Does it track correctly?

Does it subtend correctly?

Is it repeatable?

Would a line cross hair assist you more vs a dot?

No? Why change?

Yes? Why haven't you changed?

Cheers,

Doc

Re: Optics question

IMHO you gain something to going to the NF if you select the correct reticle. I got rid of the Sightron target dot that I had and went with the NP-R1 to better be able to hold wind. You could also hold windage by reading the rings on the target, but this was just not my preference. I also think the 1/4 dot covers up a little too much of the target.

Re: Optics question

If you do go with the 5.5x22 Nightforce I would suggest that you go with the 56mm. The larger obj. really seems to help out when you get over 15 power. At least it has for me. I also have the 8x32x56 Nightforce and it is quickly becoming my favorite, although I would like to try a S&B 5x25x56.

Re: Optics question

I recently switched from a Weaver T-24 to a NF 8-32x56 BR. The Weaver is a good scope and has been very reliable. But the clarity of the NF surprised me. It's really a nice scope to spend a few hours looking through: just crystal clear. I would not recommend the 5-22x50 for F-Class: you are going the wrong way. Go with either of the BR models. Personally, I prefer lower magnification than most folks and shoot with it set to around 24x.

Re: Optics question

I use a sightron 8-32, this scope tracks perfectly and at 1000yds at 32 you can pick the spot in the Xrings, saving $500 over a nightforce doesn't hurt either and glass is about the same for my quick comparison check at the matches, in my opinion the nightforce is a great scope that doesn't bring much improvement over the SIII for known distance, black on white target shooting.
hope this helps.

Re: Optics question

I went from a Leupold 8.5-25x50 to a NF 12-42x56BR on a F-class .223 bolt. The extra magnification definitely helped my scores.
But, I also agree that you should buy the best glass you can afford.
