Remember when we used to have to pick up a phone to place an order with a company? And now we're bitching, as consumers, about not having real time inventory status of a warehouse stocked with millions of items possibly.
It's as simple as scanning a barcode. I have no sympathy for people who can't learn to manage their affairs. This is no different.
I have nothing but respect for our sponsors here, but some also allow backorders to be placed, nobody is perfect.
Most companies do, but they typically tell you its not in stock BEFORE you pay. That is only fair, then the consumer can make an informed decision.
Its not like OP is charging your CC for something they don't have in stock, they notify you within a few minutes that its not in stock and that your card will not be charged until it is shipped. If you dont want to wait, take 30 seconds to email or call them and ask them to cancel your order, Ive done it a few times....its relatively painless I promise! The only painful part for me is knowing Im going to end up paying more for the item I wanted, and have to pay shipping on top of it.Why even have online ordering if you have to call anyway? Do you see the logic in that? I don't. I want to be able to buy at night or weekends and not have to wait for the fairy scope godmother to call me back or try to call during some other timezone's hours. If I know what I want and they show it as for sale on their site, then I should be able to make my decision there and then and put it on my plastic. I shouldn't have to wait till I can call them to do something this simple.
Personally, Id rather them not invest in that software/hardware if it means raising prices.
That cost really shouldn't be passed on (write it off the taxes instead?), and if it is I highly doubt it would be much of a markup on any one thing considering the huge customer base they sell to. I'd rather pay a few cents more for real-time inventory status than many dollars more for "free" hats & unnecessary shit like that.

You act like this is rocket science, but it's really not. Software for this ranges from several hundreds of dollars to several thousands depending on what features you want. Intuit (of Quickbooks fame) has a very nice package out there for retail sales inventory.
Look at the small business who sponsor this site, they keep track of their stuff. Check out Triad's site, it won't let you order things that aren't in stock (like certain colors of eagle stock packs, for example). This is not hard, and it's really not that expensive for a business of that scale.
