Has anyone ever bothered using a palm pilot with ballistic software for cosine compensation? Looking at getting a Badger Ordnance cosine indicator and was wondering what the general consensus is here concerning this. Is there an "el cheapo" palm pilot that can be used without having to spend an arm and a leg for it? Already going to spend $300 on the Kestrel wind meter and barometric setup.

Also does anyone know what the battery life is for these things?

Re: Palm Pilot and Ballistic Software

You don't need a Palm Pilot with ballistic software for inclined shooting compensation. You also don't need a $100+ device for measuring the angle.

Get a Mildot Master. It has an angle scale on the back, which you can use with a piece of string and a weight to measure the angle. Then you can use the Mildot Master to multiply your dope for the range through the air to the target by the cosine of the angle.

In addition, you could simply make up a chart of the cosine of angles, say in 5 degree increments, to use the improved riflemans method.

Re: Palm Pilot and Ballistic Software

Certainly you could do that. However, since the Mildot Master will do the multiplication for you after you use it to measure the angle, there's not much point in that. And the Mildot Master is the fastest way to do unknown-distance calculations, as well.

Or.... you could just get an iphone with the Ballistic FTE or KACs Bulletflight app and have it do it all for you, and then some.

Plus with the ability to download realtime weather, no need for the kestrel set up. I do use a kestrel hand held wind meter, but the baro setup is overkill, IMHO.

Probably not terribly well. But I wasn't thinking that the OP was looking for for operational use, or I doubt he'd be asking the question.

And with a little planning, I download the WX right before I leave cell coverage if I know I'm heading out in the desert and then I can modify the temps and wind as I go with manual inputs.

If I were in the Mts of Afghanistan - I'd be using a Mildot Master. No batteries to die at the wrong time....

Re: Palm Pilot and Ballistic Software

Hey D, are you wanting the BalCal to determine angular distortion, like for determining the angle of the target turned left and right and tilted forward and backwards when attempting a mil reading? Or you just trying to determine what effect gravity will have on the bullet when shooting from and elevated or lower position? If its the latter than the Mildot master is probably the fastest cause you just put the mil reading and size of target then the angle and its done... Pretty fast. But as far as angular distortion you gonna need to work that on a calculator... Dont know how to do it on a Mildot master... If someone else knows how to please let me in on that secret.

Re: Palm Pilot and Ballistic Software

Or just keep it simple for angle shooting.

.7 of tgt range for 45 degree angle
.9 of tgt range for 30 degree angle.

But Mildot master is the way to go. Just make sure if your using a mil dot reticle to mil the tgt for a range, mil the width of tgt not its height for a better reading.

the ballistic FTE app for the iphone is pretty sweet, it has the jbm ballistic software now. its good stuff.
