This song's been stuck in my head for a couple weeks. Townes was a great craftsman, wrote some fine tunes like this one and Tecumseh Valley. The line in this one that slays me is

The dust that Pancho bit down south
    ended up in Lefty's mouth.

    What a word picture.

Great song writer and a tragic figure on a personal level. First time I ever heard the song it was performed by Emmy Lou and still enjoy listening to it. Saw Emmy Lou in concert in 1980 with the Hot Band and they performed Pancho and Lefty. Her voice was amazing and the show lasted for nearly three hours. Nancy Griffith does a nice rendition of Tecumseh Valley on her album "Other Rooms, Other Voices" as well as one my favorite John Prine songs "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" .

I frikkin melt every time I hear Emmy Lou. She was one of my heartthrobs when I was a teenager....still is.

    My dog is named Townes.
There’s good stuff out there these days, but nothing like him.
I always found this to be one of his rawest tunes.

If you haven’t, find a copy of ‘Be here to love me’.
    It’s worth the watch.

I have downloaded nearly every one of her songs and listen to them on a regular basis. Was and still a fan of Gram Parsons and started listening to him back in the early seventies as young teenager. He had a huge influence on Emmy Lou and many songs are dedicated to him. Elite Hotel is still my favorite album of hers and bought a copy when it first was issued. Her version of "Sweet Dreams" which is live cut is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful woman with an angelic voice. She dedicated an album to him with other artists called "Return of the Grievous Angel" parts of it were played live on a show called Sessions at West 54th. Great cuts on that CD with one of my favorites is Return of Grievous Angel covered by Lucinda Williams and David Crosby.

Won't you scratch my itch sweet Annie Rich
And welcome me back to town
Come out on your porch or I'll step into your parlour
And I'll show you how it all went down
Out with the truckers and the kickers and the cowboy angels
And a good saloon in every single town
Oh and I remember something you once told me
And I'll be damned if it did not come true
Twenty thousand roads I went down, down, down
And they all lead me straight back home to you

Ive had most of Emmy Lou's music on vinyl and saw her a couple times live, once with Bill Monroe. I saw Lucinda Williams live a couple of years back and she couldnt hold Emmy Lou's shoe.

Kind of a country western Patti Smith wanna be.

Agree she couldn't hold Emmy Lou's shoes but she has her own style and like her rendition of Grievous Angel. I grew up listening to the Band, Grateful Dead, Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker, New Riders, Byrds, Poco, Flying Burrito Brothers and similar groups of that era which put out some great music. My phone is full of it and make for great road trip tunes.

When you mention the Dead dont forget these two bands:

Never got to see Quicksilver but Ive met most of the members of the Airplane. Some far out people.

One thing we can say,our music is timeless.
We can actually understand the words.
I had some kid get in my work truck one day.
The little asshole pulled out a heavy metal CD or some shit,I threw it out the window.
He looked at me and I said you're next

@Bender - dont be a pissy little millennial just because they listen to good music. 😁

The musicians mentioned had talent and coolness beyond what the current instantgrammers can imagine.

Pancho and Lefty has been a favorite of mine for a long time.
Listened to it on a lot of road trips in my old truck chasing waist deep powder on my 20’s.
They of course all started with “On the Toad Again”. I sing just a bit more off-key than Willie..... 😉
