Gunsmithing Parts cleaning.

Does anyone use naphtha in a parts cleaner to clean guns? I do and have had good results.

Anyone see any down sides?

I use mineral spirits in an ultrasonic for small gun parts then rinse in acetone. Naphtha should be fine, but expensive for rough cleaning. I'd consider it for a rinse after cleaning in a heavier solvent. With volatile solvents like naphtha or acetone/MEK, always make sure there are no ignitions sources--especially if your parts cleaner is heated like my ultrasonic; another reason I like a heavier solvent for the main cleaning.

Thanks Gene! It is not heated and in a flash resistant parts cleaner. It is easy to use and when filing and fitting parts I like to make sure I get those little shavings out at each step.

Just curious what others use and to see if anyone with some chemical background knew of any reason it would be a bad idea for firearms being built but also on finished firearms and their finishes.
