PayPal "gift" option

I don't know if you are aware of this, or even if it matters, however, there are a number of posts of items for sale here on the Hide, where one payment option given by the seller is "gift." PP is very clear in their TOS: use of the "gift" option to purchase an item can have the following effect:

1. it's a violation of their TOS for the simple reason that an item is being purchased and essentially the purchaser and the seller are engaging in a fraudulent transaction since using the "gift" option implies nothing of value has been purchased.

2. if the transaction goes belly up, e.g., the item gets lost in shipping, the seller is a bullshitter and had nothing to sell, or sends a brick, or, blah, blah, or the purchaser says, "You sent me a brick, where's my scope, rifle, etc.?," yet purchaser gets the item and keeps it, seller is screwed, and will have a helluva time getting PP to help.

3. some frequent users of PP on a high-end photography site I'm on have had their accounts frozen or blocked because they were discovered to have used the "gift" option.

Re: PayPal "gift" option

I assure you, everyone who uses the 'gift' knows of the consequences if they are caught or if the seller decides to screw the buyer and not send the proper item.

The reason it's considered to be 'fraud' is because Paypal gets screwed out of their cut and, they don't like that.

Personally, anytime I can put the screws to Paypal or eBay, I'll do exactly if only because they're a bunch of anti-gun, communist bastards.

Re: PayPal "gift" option

Getting screwed over by paypal is like screwing a crackwhore. You knew the risk before you dipped your wick. Don't whine on the internet when your pecker rots off.

Re: PayPal "gift" option

It's not an option I will use, although I have once before. If we're talking less than $50 then it's not a big deal but to lose a lot of money because you got screwed on a bad deal and not be able to retrieve it with a Paypal dispute...man, that's a scary thought!

I use them and ebay as my dirty little hussies. I use them if I need to for whatever I like, don't give a rats about their politics. If I violate their ROI and they cancel my account so be it, I agreed with the terms of use. They both definitely support my hobbies.

The charge is for convenience, fast and easy but costs a few bucks. I don't need to love them to use them to fire money to someone in under 3 minutes. But it is convenient, and worth a couple bucks.

Re: PayPal "gift" option

Another option is have a clue as to who the folks you are doing transactions actually are.

Look at their profiles, how long they have been here and yes the content of their posts. Look at what they have sold and to who and what their feedback has been. I have zero problem contacting another member who I know has done a deal with a person I am working a deal with just to see if their transaction went smooth. If you dont have a warm fuzzy then its prudent to CYA. I have offered to take PP Gift as payment in the past as a way to provide a better deal to people I feel I can trust otherwise I just specify to add in 3.5% to the item cost to cover the fee.

Bottom line is over the years we have come dangerously close to loosing the FS section. The only reason it hasnt been shut down is we police it so LL dosnt have to hear about the stoopid shit.

I have seen more than once in the past where a deal went bad and members who are LE in the areas offered to "assist in making contact". All in all this would be a dumb place to try to screw over another member.

Re: PayPal "gift" option

Honestly, this should have already been obvious to anybody with half a brain. Why on earth would you be covered for a gift? What reason in paypals mind would anyone ever need for a gift to have paypal protection?

Should also be a no-brainer that if you get caught by paypal defrauding them that they will freeze your account.

It ain't rocket science.
