Why the different bases? Picatinny and weaver. Pretty much all AR's have picatinny rails and bolt guns have weaver rails correct? Can you buy picatinny bases to put on the bolt guns? I'd like to get a QD mount and swap scope on AR to savage bolt gun for night hunting (rimfire only is legal) but is it possible?

Re: Picatinny and Weaver?! why

Everything seems to be moving towards picatinny. A lot of the bolt guns have picatinny rails now. The only people still using weaver seem to be people who buy low cost stuff and some bench rest shooter. Some picatinny stuff will fit on weaver rails some wont it’s something you have to try out. Weaver slot is .180 the bolt on more picatinny stuff is .185-189. That means the bolt will not go all the way to the bottom of the slot in most cases. Although the slot is .115 deep so in many cases it won’t need too, since 2 x .115 = .23. If half the bolt is in the slot and half in the ring then most of the time it will actually work, or at least the reason it doesn’t fit is not because of the diameter of the bolt. Weaver rails can be mounted lower on the receiver so be careful about that. I suspect that the lower mounting is why so people still prefer them.

Re: Picatinny and Weaver?! why

The Picatinny locking slot width is 0.206 in (5.23 mm). The only differences between the Picatinny rail and the similar Weaver rail are the size of these slots and the fact that they are standardized.

Weaver rails have a slot width of 0.180 in (4.57 mm), but are not necessarily consistent in the spacing of slot centers. So Weaver rings will fit on Picatinny rails; but most Picatinny rings will not fit on Weaver rails.

Re: Picatinny and Weaver?! why

The most annoying with those is that weaver is no standard, so it can basicly look just like the manufactuers want to, while the picatinny actually is a standard and still lots of manufacturers produce something they call picatinny, but it is somthing else. Two good examples of "picatinnymonsters" are rails on AI AE and nigthforce rails, where neither of them are made according to any of the existing standards.
