As I’ve had some difficulty finding good velocity information for my rifle, I decided to go ahead and test the velocity of the three factory loads I prefer.
Rifle: POF R415 16.5” barrel w/Geissele SSA
Optic: Elcan SpecterDR156-C2
Chronograph: CED M2
Temp: 68F
String/Rate: 10 rounds fired within 15 or 20 seconds
Ammo tested:
Hornady 223 75gr BTHP Training 9760EL: Average velocity 2556; ES 117
Hornady 5.56 75gr BTHP T2 8126N: Average velocity 2706; ES 26
Black Hills 5.56 50gr TSX: Average velocity 3175; ES 33
Although not incredibly scientific, it gives me an idea of what this ammo does in my rifle with a faster rate of fire.
I adjusted the Elcan to zero the 75gr T2 at 100yds. With this alignment, the faster 50gr TSX shot as if zeroed at 55yds, which works out fine as it shoots extremely flat (2” high at 100yds, 4.5” low at 300yds).
Regrettably, I have the C2 reticle for the Elcan which is calibrated for 7.56 ammo, so for longer range holdovers I either have to figure out interim holds or swap it for one with the C1 5.56 reticle. Then again, I don’t think I’m going to be doing much shooting past 300yds with this rifle.
The POF ran perfectly. A real joy to shoot. Many thanks to Frankie Ice!
Hopefully this small sample of info will be useful to someone considering this rifle and/or ammo.
