POF & Hogan ,223 and .308 owners

My brother and i plan on taking a trip before long if possible to do some prairie dog hunting. I have alot of rounds for my 308 Hogan and alot for my 223 POF but i currently don't have any premium ammo.

I need to get these zero'ed with some top notch ammo. My question is everyone that has owned these awhile i'm sure knows what they shoot best with, what grain, powder etc if your buying factory ammo such as v-max Hornady etc.

Should i buy brass and reload myself and if so any info of what i should load would be great.

If factory ammo what grain, brands etc have shot best for you and what kinda groups at 100yrds?

Flatter shooting and faster the better for what i want but if the .308 needs 168gr to shoot most accuratly thats what i'll get.

I'd like to stay with 55gr with the .223.

Cheapest best ammo always a plus but looking for good stuff thanks Mark

Blackhills 50g Vmax loads shoot well in my AR's. You can duplicate spec with 25.9g-26.0g Benchmark.

Very fast and flat shooting ammo for the 308 would be some 168 Hornady TAP. I noticed out off all the various types of factory ammo I have shot out of my POF 308 that it was the hottest. what barrel length is your 308?

My .223 likes the 77gr FGMM the best and the .308 does the FGMM in 175 gr.

I played with a lot of types and weights and these were the most consistent and accurate for me.

Ok fellas my .223 is 18" with 1-8 twist

My .308 is 18" as well with a 1-10 twist rate

Most of my current ammo is FMJ so its no good for anything but punching paper.

Looking for good hollow point rds, ballistic tips etc that are accurate.

Well, if you want factory ammo the black hills 52gr is stupid accurate and works great on coyotes. I duped it with TAC and 52nosler/speer bullets.

Don't know of any varmint factory ammo for 308, not really my thing besides I handload everything 308 anyways. Any match ammo in 168gr would be a safe bet though black hills, federal, etc but pricey...

I didn't have much luck with 110 V-Max in my POF P-308, but I was handloading. 168 grain TAP ammo performed very well and convinced me to switch to the 168 AMAX for handloads from the 155 AMAX I was using. The 155 AMAX I could get 0.75 MOA accuracy with some loads using IMR 8208 XBR and great velocity, but they're more expensive than the 168 and ultimately the 168 shot better from my rifle.

Reportedly the 168 grain TAP load from Hornady is loaded with 44.0 grains of Varget(internet hearsay), and it was 0.75 MOA for me, clocking 2450 FPS over the chrony. I found my most accurate handload with 44.5 grains of Varget in Winchester brass. This load from my rifle produces around 0.5 MOA accuracy at 2560 FPS from the 16.5" barrel. If you have the ability to handload I would suggest that, not only because it's cheaper but because tuning a load to a rifle is the best way to get exactly what you want.

It's not a POF, and it has a 24" barrel, but I just posted this thread this morning, comparing Federal Fusion to Federal Match and Hornady Match ammunition. The Hornady was $10 less expensive per box than the Federal Match (~$39), and only $7 more expensive than the fusions (~$22).

Match bullets would work well on prairie dogs. At least, they tend to fragment in large game...

For factory ammo, my POF 223 (16" 1/8) delivers excellent groups with Hornady 55gr SP and 55gr TAP. Fiocchi 55gr comes in at a close second and cost a little less.

I shoot 155 and 175 Bergers in my POF 308. It likes them both.

i had no issues with any .308 ammo from 147-175gr
