Range Report Poll > Kestrel that's compatable with Iphone/Ipad

Re: Poll > Kestrel that's compatable with Iphone/Ipad

I just put shooter into DA mode and type in the DA the Kestrel measures. Works for me. I wouldn't buy another Kestrel just to gain the connectivity. If I have to replace mine then yeah it would be nice.

The reason you can't connect a Kestrel is because the Bluetooth module in the Kestrel itself is not approved by Apple. It is true there is not app that allows this, that is because the two will not pair. It's a hardware issue and the modules cost quite a bit more than a standard Bluetooth module. For Keatrel to add a more expensive module they must first know there is a demand. That's what I wanted to start this poll. If there are enough people wanting it I will interact with Kestrel on your guys behalf and push for this upgrade and if not I will keep plugging in the data along with everyone else.

When you consider that the weather does not change by a measureable amount in the longest update time setting, and harldy changes enough to bother with over the course of an hour, why does a shooter need the feature at all?

Between loss of battery life and the time spent pairing and connecting the device, I could enter the data manually many times over.

At a high level correct, but not really. The issue is that Apple is concerned about security implications regarding bluetooth-over-serial connections. Therefore, Apple has chosen to leave out that part of the bluetooth stack. The Kestel device makes bluetooth-over-serial calls to either iphone or android device. Confirmed on jail-broken Iphone with 2 different complete bluetooth stacks. Sadly it boils down to Apple deciding "We don't need that functionality" ... I decided to try to go android (40.00) was worth the experiment.
To be honest, it connected and transmitted data, however it was pretty inconsistent. I also found the Iphone MUCH easier to read/magnify in bright sun.

My 27 cents.

ok,i need some teaching.i know guys who use their iphones with shooter to get their dope but use their kestrels to get current weather conditions,BUT kestrel version with buildt in horus data pretty much elimanates the need for for iphone shooter right?if that's the case why would you need blue tooth hook up.just wondering excatly what the kestrel horus version actually does and why you would need a blue tooth hook up?
