poor man setup

Re: poor man setup

22 Trainers:

Marlin 25N & 925, home-brew trigger jobs, Millet Angle-Loc Rings, Tasco 2.5-10x Varmint series scopes. Total investment per stick (have 2) --> $180

Centerfire "big bore"

Mauser k98, Adams and Bennet 1:10 barrel 26" long. Chambered in 30-06. Timney trigger, Fajen stock, Osprey Int'l Scope, Leupold Rings, stock mauser bottom metal and safety. Total investment including reamer --> $700 (not including dies, brass, etc.) All machining and refinishing work done by either myself or my dad.

Centerfire "small bore"

Savage Mod 12 FV in 204 Ruger. Switch barrel setup for 6mm-223, throated for 95gr Amax. Simmons 6.5-2-x 44 glass, Leupy mounts, Choate Sniper stock. Factory 204 Ruger Barrel, Shilen 1:8 twist "unfinished blank" for 6-223, PTG Reamer and throating reamer, brass, dies, etc. total investment --> $975, all machining work done by me.

I can't find the links to the pics right now.

Re: poor man setup

Well, I have to make some assumptions, as not even a chosen application is specified.

I find that I don't have a special need for a supernice trigger, and that I can usually get a sporter weight barrel to perform for me with a little bit of tweaking, like adding a resilient pressure pad at the end of the barrel channel with a fairly serious amount of upward pressure. I also like the .30-'06 chambering because it's capable without being marginal, readily available pretty much everywhere, and adequate for flatly anything shootable on the North American Continent.

My rifle is a post '64 M70 lightweight sporter .30'06.

If I had to duplicate it today, I'd simply buy a Stevens 200 .30-'06 and keep the mods to what I mentioned above. Rifle list $399 (I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find it retailing somewhere on special for maybe $100 less), Tasco VAR624X42M scope, maybe $80, and WallyWorld Weaver two piece bases and medium rings guessing around $50-$60 tops. $550 maybe altogether before discounts?

It might benefit from handloading as pressure pads can have a tendency to alter harmonics, and most factory sporters seem to be configured/tuned to like commercial loads.

As an everything-gone-to-hell firearm, I'd grab that one first.

Re: poor man setup

Actually, some good stuff listed. I think it is a great topic for a thread but the idea of being a poor man is relative. It seems to me that the more I make the faster it goes out and in larger numbers. I fear that I will eventually realize that some of the money I put into guns and ammo should have been directed into barren land somewhere off the main paths where I can shoot with my friends. Anyone else having to make greater and greater coordinations to hunt and/or shoot?

Don't get me wrong, I have a level, despite not shooting that much on a cant; I have several inclination indicators, despite realizing that shooting off a grassy knoll does not equate to high angle; 6 different kinds of tripods and mounts; a safe to secure the combos to my gun safes; pouches to store extra pouches, the list goes on...and I wake up some mornings wondering if I might be missing something because I do not have a special claw or rubber booties attached to all my firearms.

Deep in thought now...considering all the doodads I have accumulated...every member of my family has 14 flashlights...I wonder if I did not somewhere lose track of the most basic motto of the infantry...

Re: poor man setup

Used Ruger M77 MKII ca. 1980's .257 Roberts all factory $300. Bed it, torque down all screws. Front screw to 90in lbs. Burris Fullfied 3-9x40 scope with millet rings $100, Timney Trigger $100. Shoots 87gr Sierra or 100gr Sierra SP's sub MOA to 250yds with factory pencil barrel and handloads. Killed a lot of animals and paper/steel with it. Never tested beyond 250 because I keep spending money on other rifles, stocks, triggers, optics. LOL.

Re: poor man setup

CDNN in Abilene had FNH PBR barreled actions, fluted barrel 20 or 24 inch, scope rail, trigger just not the stock for $399. We put in Houge overmold stock pillar type $100. I have 4 a friend has 10 for his training facility. All shot 1/2 at 100 and we both have shot about 2 inch at 300 yes. No special loads not even torque in stock. See threads if they still have some go for it. The magazines are a loss but CDI a vendor here makes bottom metal for about $200.+ use ACIS mags.
CDNN had some SPR FN actions only for $349. if you want to build

Re: poor man setup

I guess it really depends on what is "poor man" definition. Here it appears that $1000 is in poor man's realm. If I was on AR15.com "poor man" set up would more like a $500 AR, or $300 AK.

I spent $1200 for this complete set up, like new condition as previous owner only shot it once: Remington 700P .308 with 26" LTR type fluted barrel, AICS 1.0, Nikon Tactical 2.5-10x44 scope, Badger base, ARMS rings and Harris bipod. It's the most I've ever paid for bolt gun, but it definitely was a deal that I couldn't refuse, and put me in the poor house. Looks like it qualifies as poor man's set up too.

+1,lol......Yeah seems like 1000$ is pretty much poor man territory considering i have seen some rigs upwards of 4 or 5k.Hell some guys use optics that cost twice as much as my whole setup.......

Leupold Mk4 ____________$625

IMG_9950.jpg

I really havent got down to working up a load for this thing yet, been shooting loads I have for my FN SPR but I can say this is one great shooting rifle and it's bone stock, the cheap palstic stock hasnt even been removed from the action.

Not going to bore you with cherry picking groups like I have seen numerous times. I am not a great shooter but I challange everyone here to take their substandard cheap ecconomy rifles and shoot the practical tactical dot target like I did. They are a seires of 1/2" dots and fired at 100yds.It doesnt cost but 20-25 rds of ammo and some of your time.

I was doing great until the POI shifted on #15.

**Note To Self** Maybe I need to bed it in a $800 McMillan.

Re: poor man setup

My poor mans rig when was the first new rifle I bought myself. REM 710 for $300 with scope and rings a bit after I got married. The stories of the wives killing husbands for spending money scared me. She didn't mind at all even though $300 was months of extra $ then. I still love my wife

Before that was a cheap savage 7mmrem mag my dad bought me when I was about 15.
It has been a huge change since then and a room full of stuff. I think my reloading bench cost more than fist rifle and I built it from scratch.

Everyone loves a 3000$ setup but most of us cant afford one.Thats the reason i started this thread so all of us that has a 1k setup can show off a little.
Remember it doesnt have to cost a arm and a leg to shoot good.
