I don't have the solution, but I don't think you provided one either. How do we prevent fraud in counting and fraud in voting? Voter verification seems like a good first step, but we also need video and data trails for counters that can we verified easily and open to audits. Who counts the vote and the process is as important as who votes, maybe more.
Then again, if we can't trust the doj to prosecute cheaters and if the punishment isn't severe it likely won't matter.
You can do all that and still keep the secret vote.
1. strict ID laws, if you are too lazy to go get an ID before election season starts, tough luck it's your own fault, try better next time.
2. IDs must CLEARLY show if the person is a USA citizen and your ID doesn't show that, you are out.
3. The Poll judges and workers must make sure the ID looks legit to their best efforts and whatever biometrics are used, (such as picture) seem to be correct.
4. Much like it used to be, you have to be registered to vote at least 30 days in advance of the election, and registered to your correct primary home address as it shows on your ID
If the above are not enforced, then good luck with anything else.
Voting ONLY in person, no exceptions. If you are in the Military and are not in your local voting district, then it's the Military's job to set up stations for soldiers to vote in person at their base and have the results securely sent to each location involved, and then send the physical copies.
Have 2 or 3 weeks of early voting ending on Election day.
I quite like the current Texas system where you make all your selections on a touch screen, then it prints out the official ballot both machine and human readable, then you take that, check that it shows what you wanted and feed it into another machine which scans it and then also stores the paper card copy.
The voting cards need to be high security jobs like money that are hard to fraud.
They need to have serial numbers and be tracked to each individual location, how many were used on each day and in total and ensure the numbers line up with the number of voters that actually legitimately voted.
People need to physically verify that their votes are on the printout correctly before scanning.
The boxes where the printed vote cards are collected need to be under armed guard from either the federal level or the military with full video surveillance.
Any software or hardware to count votes, must be fully open source and fully verified and it must be audited and fixed before the elections and no changes at all can be made in any way after that until after the election cycle is done, and it must be proven there is no way to access the machines remotely or change them.
All machine counts are ONLY good for a rough guess and the actual legal vote count is done by hand, in person, where each card is brought up, inspected by a panel representatives from all concerned parties and any other registered vote watch groups and then tallied manually for the official results.
Then the cards are kept in secure storage in case a court orders them inspected again.
Once early voting starts it needs to be unlawful to go claiming what the vote is, no exit polls, no predictions etc, or saying the results until the end of voting and then you can say what the machine results are but also specify those are not legal and the official results will be announced after the manual counts and no politicians can claim victory or defeat until then.
But again it's pointless if nobody is going to enforce it because half the country is good with cheating as long as it helps the Democrats win.
