I don't think so. At least from personal experience.
I will use "the family" for people like the mother and daughter.
The family all grew up together, "uncle dave" right there with all of them. The same upbringing as the mother, IIRC Dave was the mothers brother. What we need to understand is what happened to everyone after they "grew up". Why one went one way and another went the other way. We don't know enough to come to anything, so we must drop it there.
Now for me, I can say what I saw, finally the light came on that I was being played, being used and I had enough of it and walked away. I think "dave" finally learned that and he closed the "bank of uncle dave". And now the family has no clue. Trying to explain it to them is pointless, they are already so lost they will never understand, you are just ungrateful and hateful, toss in a few -ists for good measure.
In the end Uncle dave will be much more happy, do his own thing and every once and a while something will pop into his head and it will make them think, those fucks just used me, and then go on about his day and be more happy for it. It might take some time for him to understand they used him and it is not his fault but he likely will get there.
