Speaking about mechanisms failing, that is EXACTLY what happened to my other neighbor (Ukrainian, not the Algerian family) last year. One of her front door deadbolts snapped the pawl which connects the handle to the bolt assembly and she was not able to leave her apartment. Essentially locked in. But all three of our households share a fire escape landing and we are all close enough with each other that we can visit each other unannounced on a routine basis so she went across the fire escape cage and alerted me to the situation at my kitchen window. I went into her apt via the same fire escape route, and thermal lanced both deadbolts in the broken lock apart with a steel arrow shaft I got from Sinoart Archery a long time ago, loaded with steel wool in the core and an oxygen canister and an old Bernzo oxymapp brazing torch with the mapp line removed and sealed and the torch already converted into a lancing tool. Then the malfunctioning lock was removed and I placed a new one in. Only minor thermal damage to the door frame and wall which can be easily addressed. I adjusted the O2 flow once the flame jet was stable and the plasma was focused onto the target area in a 1 inch long 7000°+F blade. Always be prepared.
