Ok so we lost our golden about a year ago to a tumor after having her for nearly 7 years. We are thinking about getting another puppy but probably not another golden because of the shedding.. we were thinking about a Briard.. Anyone have experience with them? Thoughts? We have 2 children ages newborn and 2.5 years..

Re: Possibly a new dog...

You have kids? Get a 3 year old GSD with cert. hips, that has been socialized.
Buy once, cry once. Briards are o.k., too laid back for me (at least the few I have contact with).

All of the sh*t eaters shed, it is just to what degree. My answer is wood floors and a broom. Apply daily.

Good luck. If you do get a GSD, it will be the dog your kids grow up with.

Re: Possibly a new dog...

If shedding is the issue
consider a standard poodle
they are smart, easily trained, good with families, athletic, and they do not shed. There are few inbred diseases, and from a top notch breeder, (I have had 5, all lived 12 -14 years.

Re: Possibly a new dog...

If its solely for your children and you don't want to deal with shedding, +1 for the poodle. They're smart and very friendly. Get one as a puppy and remove the nipping issues they tend to have. The nipping is playful but they have razor sharp teeth. They're also hypoallergenic but require grooming because they can get matted. My mom owns a few and I have to say they learn QUICK.

P.S. Don't give it a fufu haircut.

He is a Halvanese,
I've owned several dogs and this one is my sisters, but... this is the best dog I've ever met or had experiance with!

The breed has a huge heart, but it won't get them in trouble... they LOVE children and other dogs!
The only thing that gets him in trouble is, he thinks every dog is his friend that wants to play!
They are small, have hypo-allergenic hair, and live up too an average of 15 years. Only thing that sucks is the $60 bill every month and a half for grooming.

Now I've been a medium to large sized dog person, and my 6'2" 260 lbs self looks funny walking this fuzzy lil guy... but he alone has managed to get me celly numbers! lol

Re: Possibly a new dog...

My wife is a dog trainer and here are her recommendations for no shedding, good with kids, all are high energy though, so you must like playing with your dog!!!
1. Consider a doodle: labradoodle or a goldendoodle, best of both worlds, great temperament, no shedding, but expensive haircuts.
2. Standard poodle: same as above, really smart, need lots of mental exercise as well as physical.
3. Go to your local shelter and save a dog

Ridgebacks are great family dogs they can be very protective of family members and property. They however are not a breed to consider if you will have to leave them caged up all day, they need daily exercise or they can be a lil wild.

Re: Possibly a new dog...

I'm not a fan of ridgebacks. By themselves they are probably OK but in a group not so much. Neighbor has several and they become very aggressive towards our labs and poodle and we have had several trips to the vet.

Unless your dogs are going on to their property I'd say its more than likely a socialization problem, my Shih Tzu has similar problems. Mine have been very good about dealing with other dogs but they have been introduced to other groups of dogs at a young age, but if they feel like them or my wife daughter or I am in danger it's a diffrent world.

Re: Possibly a new dog...

We had to put our 12 year old boxer down on Monday. Sad day. That being said the best two breeds I have owned are the Boxer and an American Bulldog. They will let the kids just roll around on them, pull their ears, stick their arms down their throats and never raise a hair. They are protective when they need to be and my AB is as laid back as they come. Loyal, friendly and protective.

Side note.. "0" Posts? am I really that much of a noob on ths board? I gotta get around here more.

Back on topic: I grew up with a Golden and completely understand the OP's sentiments. Since those expereiences as a youth I have always been a large dog kinda guy. I like the earlier suggestion of a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are really cool dogs. Bro-in-law had one named "Millhouse" after Nixon's middle name.

I personally went with Danes. These days I have two - 140lbs and 105lbs respectively. I had good experiences with the Mid-Adlantic Great Dane Rescue league and got an extremely well behaved large male who has kept his name from the rescue.
"Thor" stays on my right hip like glue and everywhere we go people comment on how big and gorgeous he is.
