I have wanted to get into this long range/precision thing for a while. I have spent a good amount of time reading about possible options and decided a good 700 in 223 would be good for me considering I dont have the range to take advantage of higher cal's distance potential (not to mention the skill, yet). BUT I already have a 260 but in the shorter action model seven so why not use it right?

On to the SS remington .260 model seven. It was bought years ago solely as my deer rifle. Now we have moved away from the lease and it has been sitting in the safe for ~ 12 years now with 1 1/2 box's shot through it, (didnt see many deer in thick east texas).

Could I possibly use IT as a base for this new rifle build? Its already in a good caliber for long range but a new barrel would be needed obviously, and stock but i dont really like the ones available specificaly for the "seven". http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-373/H-dsh-S-Precision-Pro-dsh-Series-2000/Detail
-And trigger work but thats really a simple thing I could eventually do, adjust or buy a new one.

So is it possible to have either a rem 700 stock fitted to the sevens action or the other way around? Would it even be worth the cost, time, or messing with this practically new rifle?

This forum is great btw I have learned about and seen a ton of awesome rifles. Maybe someday I can have one too;)

The 223 will do good out to about 600 yds. Cheaper to buy/reload ammo too. I would sell the 260 or trade for a 700 action. Nothing wrong with the M7, but most parts, stocks, scope mounts that fit 700's, won't fit 7's. A 260 will sell easily on Gunbroker too.

I have a model 7 in 260 from the Remington Custom Shop and it's the most accurate stick I have next to my AWSM. It's a great action designed to save weight. There are many after market stocks available from HS, B&C, and McMillan. If you want to build it you won't have any problems finding components...

anything mcmillan makes for the 700, they'll make for a Seven.

your bottom metal options will be limited, however, but aftermarket triggers are a direct swap, as are barrels and recoil lugs (obviously).

EGW makes a 20MOA base for the Seven.

So really, as long as you don't mind sticking with factory model seven bdl floorplate, you can build a honey of a rifle with one.

Ferret hit it well. I have a M7 in 7 SAUM and it's a great rifle. Manners makes a great stock for the model 7's and really the only thing that will be lacking is aftermarket bottom metal options.

I have a feeling that when you upgrade the stock you'll be surprised at how well that thing will shoot as it is.

The EGW base for it with good rings and glass coupled to an excellent stock will get you something that will shoot 600y better than most shooters. The 260 will burn the barrel out in a few thousand rounds and then you can send the action off to one of the great gunsmiths on this site for a blueprint job and a new barrel.

I've got a model 7 with a Kreiger 9-twist, 26 inch barrel with a HTG tactical brake, sitting in an H-S Precision PSS050 stock. Shoots everything from 85gr Sierras to 140 MK's extremely well; light enough to carry yet will do 1000 yards easily if your shooting skills are up to par.

As said, no detachable mag systems available is the only downside.
