I do not know if this is the right place to post this, but what does anyone suggest as a good stcok for a pre 64 winchester. This gun is mainly going to be used for target shooting and the occasion deer hunt with it. I am having a varmit barrel made for the gun.

Re: pre 64 winchester stock

I agree with leave it alone! Pre-64's are very collectable, some very much more than others but all are collectable. Keep your 70 as is and start with a new gun/build.

greenxjcj,

Is your Winchester a model 70 or a Model 1894? Depending on the condition of the rifle, i would probably keep it as is unless you plan on really using the gun. If anything, you could always buy a new stock to use and abuse with the gun and keep your original so if you ever decide to sell it, it still have a good amount of value.

Check this website out. They make great stocks and are replicated to match the original wood grain and color. The stocks are also slightly oversize to custom fit and finish the stock how you see fit. Good luck with your decision, i hope this helped.

I like the McMillans in the factory Monte Carlo config for sportier weight rifles. I have them on a 270 and a 338. I have a new in box spare that I would sell if you choose to go that route.

Re: pre 64 winchester stock

Yes it is a model 70. The stock is completely messed up on it and cracked in a few places. As for the barrel, it needs a new one cause this one has been shot out on it. The rifle was not taken care of very well, this is why I am putting a new barrel and stock on it.

Re: pre 64 winchester stock

Bell & Carlson makes a pre-inletted stock for pre 64 M-70 that is pretty decent. If you bed it carefully, it will work well.

+1 on the McMillan copy of the orig winchester stock with the monte carlo comb. With the sporter weight barrel that would be a nice setup.

Seeing as you are only doing a sporter weight barrel, you could always just open the barrel channel and bed the original stock. With a good epoxy seal of all the wood that would give you a nice light setup that will take the weather.

If you ever change your mind and go heavy barrel, McM also makes a sweet copy of the winchester factory "Marksman" stock that came on the Model 70 and Model 52 target rifles.
