You must have been working it hard or it's 100 years old![]()

Nope I’m on the bottom edge of the Hill Country about 5 miles above Medina Lake in Bandera County.
A little night shooting with my son. Twin 100 yard tubes. GAP Impact, 6.5 Creedmoor.

I’m 20 miles from there. All three sons work there. So southern side of the hill country. I'm familiar, originally from Boerne.
I bought it from Don @ Dons Guns on Fredericksburg Rd in San Antonio about 1968.You know what, I'm thinking I got that gun vise maybe 35/40 years ago. I'll have to look up the name and see if I can find when they stopped selling them. Bought it local before mail order or internet sales became the norm.
I have not shot the rifle in many years, possibly when the weather cools off a bit here, I will load up some rounds and try it from the bench!
I still have all the reloading components and equipment around here somewhere.
If the groups are not too embarrassing, will post them.
I have only used the Gilkes-Ross in competition, never tried it from a bench.
20+ years ago, I was an active Service Rifle competitor, used an M1A built for me by Clint Fowler.
The younger guys all had AR’s and scored better, but I like the M1A, as I carried an M14 in the Army in the 60’s.
Switched to Match Rifle when I became too old and creaky for Service Rifle.
Thus Mike Ross built the Match gun for me.
But if you want a specific type Hunting Rifle, not a Competition or Specialty Item and you can purchase a new first quality rifle as cheap as a barrel job then there’s something wrong with that picture.A good barrel will cost more than the cost of a standard factory hunting rifle.
Hawkeyes’ barrel must have a specific claw extractor cut, which adds time, which leads to cost. Flutes adds time, which leads to cost. The estimate you wrote is not abnormal.
Don’t even look at the cost of a quality carbon fiber barrel blank if you think steel is expensive.
Another thing I noted they mentioned if I wanted my barrel crowned theirs an add’l charge. World I was reared in that’s part and parcel of a bbl job. I’ve been in business over 50 years and put up Elec Gates over 35 years, prices increased substantially but I’m still lucky to gross $350 out of a job and am married to it for a year on free warranty svc.But if you want a specific type Hunting Rifle, not a Competition or Specialty Item and you can purchase a new first quality rifle as cheap as a barrel job then there’s something wrong with that picture.

Son w/ “F” class I built for him, after 60 shot match.
When he was a little kid, did 3P Smallbore, I think it helped his “F” class shooting.

Cammo Tape, not even sure where it came from. Whenever I see some in a shop I grab it. Very seldom I am in a gun shop anyway. None close to where I live. What did you wrap your suppressor with?

That seems like an appropriate amount of a great thing. We are aware that you have a chassis preference. Is there such a thing as "too much of a good thing"?View attachment 7422697
And they should! That's exactly what led me to get into long range shootingYou guys have really nice stuff... I'm just a poor cattle rancher that thinks coyotes and ground hogs should die at long ranges...
