Some guys have started a predator taxidermy thread on another site. I figured it would be cool to see what you guys have had done. if you have something that you would like to share lets see it.

I'll start and we'll see what follows.... Here are three of my predator mounts (fox, bobcat, black coyote) and I have another bobcat mount but it has been relegated to my 4 year olds room due to the poor quality job. Pretty soon I will have a badger to add to the living room, I'm looking forward to that one...

The black coyote was done by Joey Lesch in Houston who was supposed to be the "best" around and the only studio to have two master taxidermists (or soemething like that). It is fair to average at best and was twice what I have paid for full body mounts... The fox and bobcat were both done by Scott Becker (Bucksnort Taxidermy) in Mart Texas and I can honestly say he did one heck of a good job. It just goes to show that the name of the taxidermist doesn't really mean that much, sometimes good things come from unexpected places...

Re: Predator mounts...

I appreciate the compliments.

lwilliams, I haven't turned out a call in quite a while. Between work and family I haven't had much time and life in general has been getting in the way. Maybe when things start to cool off a little I will get back out there...

Re: Predator mounts...

Fur bearers are tough to do well.

I have yet to see a fur bearer mount that looks realistic to me. Its just impossible to get the fur to lay in a natural way on the form. Especially on longer haired species like fox and coyotes. They always look "fake" to me.

You're right about that! I have a couple other predator mounts that the public never sees as they are so badly done. They all came from "good" whitetail and duck guys but the sure couldn't do a bobcat to save their life.

The same guy who did the fox and bobcat is finishing up my 2009 Nebraska buck and a badger at the moment. Hopefully I will at least have the deer in the next week or so.

I'm looking forward to getting this one back, he's going to look good with the others...

I've never heard of one that big from around where I hunt. The one above is about as large as they get and I could only guess on the weight as we were a long ways from a scale..

450-500 is a big one. Heard of a few bigger, but not confirmed.

Re: Predator mounts...

cbosshog79,
Its a shame you aren't happy with your "average at best" black coyote mount. I think it looks awesome and if I ever shoot a black one like that, you can bet I'll be getting it mounted. I think it is a pretty cool mount with the antler and brush around it.

Don't get me wrong, it's not horrible but they sure could have done better. Predators are apparently very difficult to do and I see very few that do them well. The fellow who did that one was supposedly one of the top taxidermists in Texas and charges twice as much for that type of mount than the other fellow charges for a full body with the base and "landscape" so I had just hoped for more detail.

As with allot of other so-so mounts the difference in this one was the lack of sculpting and fitting the form to the hide. It appears to me that he fit the hide to the form and that just didn't work out too well...
