When I was in the Boy Scouts, we were hiking down the road when the Scout Master directed everyone to a creek to fill up their canteens.
I didn't like the way the water looked but everyone filled their canteens. I had iodine tablets back then but can't remember if everyone else dropped one in their freshly filled canteens.
Iodine tablets or not; I didn't have a good feeling about the water. It was in a slow moving creek and the water looked really dark, like it was tainted. So I didn't fill up my canteen.
It was a good thing, I was the only one that didn't get sick later.
The moral of the story is that just because everyone else thinks that something is a good idea doesn't mean it's the smart thing to do.
