i have one of those newer marlin xt vr rifles i tried some 60gr sss ammo it shot really good but when the barrel cooled down it would take 3-5 shots to get back on track so i switched to remington subs 36gr hp and it does the same thing now im shooting remington golden bullets it shoots them hole in hole with a clean and dirty barrel was wondering if anyone has had this problem with their rifle i would love to shoot subs in it for squirrels so any help would be great

Re: problems with subsonic ammo

I have one of the same rifles. My advice would be to try different ammo. In my experience, most (if not all) Remington .22lr ammo sucks pretty bad. Mine really likes CCI Standard Velocity. I'm still searching for a sub HP that works well though. I have some RWS that I will try as soon as I can make some time.

I'm surprised yours shot the 60 gr. SSS so well. They keyholed pretty bad from mine.

I experience similar issues between cold bore vs. warm bore with certain ammo. After the way CCI SV performed, though, I'm beginning to think the inconsistencies are a result of the bullet lube cooling and solidifying in the bore.

Re: problems with subsonic ammo

You might give SK Subsonic HP a try in your .22lr. Shoots lights out in all of mine. Price is not to bad. Good luck.

im looking for ammo that shoots dead on no matter if the barrel is clean or dirty and not as loud as my remington golden bullets to kill squirrels with

When it comes to .22 rimfire, being able to put the bullet where the cross hairs are every time, takes consistency in the ammo and consistency costs money. How much do you want to spend on a box of 50?

You aren't going to find what you're looking for in a bulk box.

For casual plinking when I'm not looking to win anything and am just shooting at golf balls and stuff like that, I shoot CCI Standard Velocity in the paper boxes. It runs about $2.50 a box of 50.

When I'm shooting a local benchrest match or just a friendly, informal competition, I shoot Wolf Match Target. This stuff goes where you point it a vast majority of the time. It isn't really match ammo, but it's really close at $5 for 50.

When I'm shooting a match where the difference between winning and losing is the difference between dishing crap out or taking it until the next match, I now shoot Eley Black Box. I find a lot number that my rifle likes and buy a bunch of it.

If all you're doing is dinging steel, maybe 3 MOA in size, the CCI SV will do you nicely out to about 300. It might go farther, but I've only done 300. With the Wolf, you can make that about 2 MOA in size. With a lot of Eley BB that your rifle likes, it'll do 1 MOA, but you have to be really good with the wind.

BTW, I never clean the bores on my rimfires. When I swap ammo, I just reseason the barrel. Well, actually, I do clean them; but at around 5000 round intervals.

Re: problems with subsonic ammo

You'll need a faster twist rate to stabilize the 60gr bullets. DO NOT shoot them thru a suppressor if you don't have a barrel that will stabilize them.

I agree with the members that say wolf match is a good round. I have a Savage MKII that shoots 40GR Aguila SS rds just as good though and they are cheaper than the Wolf stuff. It all depends on the individual rifle ...... which has already been stated.
