I have searched and can't find many review or info on these bolt bodies. I have talked to a few people and decided I wan't to get one and have one question. The spiral fluted ones are out of stock at midway but they do have ones with straight flutes. I know from reading around that people don't recommend straight flutes because of how they can catch and mar the brass. My question is since the PTG bodies are really just a lightly ground flute, would they be shallow enough that it wouldn't have any negative effects associated with straight flutes?

Re: PTG Bolt body

I haven't tried the PTG straight-fluted bolt, but based upon my experience with the spiral-fluted versions, I'd have to think that the flutes are still sharp enough to shave brass. They are certainly sharp enough to take small chunks out of fingertips while lapping-in a new bolt

Definitely not cheaper. My spiral fluted one piece really does have very sharp edges.

He's refering to headspace differences between the old and new bolt.

Headspace can change. Lug length may be too long not allowing the bolt to close. Lug position/length may cause the handle to be too tight in the receiver notch.

I'd wait until I was ready to rebarrel to install a new bolt. Also ask yourself what you think the new bolt will do that the oem doesn't.

Re: PTG Bolt body

The PTG one-piece bolts probably won't close without taking a few thou off the action lugs, and even then sometimes a bit of file work is required in the bolt handle notch. Lapping the bolt to the raceway is often required. If using a full-size M16 extractor, work will be required to get the extractor to snap over the cartridge rim (either by cutting a relief in the barrel, or profiling the back surface of the extractor).

In short, it's not a drop-in. They are gorgeous pierced of machine work, however, and when properly fitted, result in a very slick action.
