Putting Brakes on Hunting Rifles

I know this a topic where people have varying opinions, but I still want to ask this from my perspective.

I have a Proof Research Elevation Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. The barrel is a carbon fiber 24". I also have an Area 419 Brake. I wanted to ask if its a good idea to put a brake on a hunting rifle? How more sound will it cause? Not really concerned about recoil from a 6.5 Creedmoor as I am used to the recoil of much higher calibers like the .270 Win and .300 WM.

Does installing a brake provide any benefits in a hunting scenario? What are the pros vs cons?

Would like to hear the opinions of the enthusiasts here. Thanks!

If you don't need a brake, don't use one. If you want a brake, use one that's as light as possible.

I put a brake on mine to ensure less muzzle rise on potential follow up shots.

You're shooting a gun in the woods, it's going to be loud no matter what.

IMO nothing makes the experience of shooting worse than a brake. The added noise and concussion aren't remotely worth the reduction in recoil unless you are shooting some punishingly large caliber that is basically otherwise unusable.

I shoot a braked 28 nosler in the field without earpro. One shot doesn't do much to my ears it seems. Maybe it's all the artillery I normally shoot with just my fingers in my ears.

People been using thicker recoil lugs for a long while. I light gun with a large cartridge is gonna have more felt recoil regardless if a inch thick lug is used. Its physics.

I get it is very manly to post how hunting is different, that you don’t need to have the preciseness or accuracy of a match gun. It is not uncommon to hear the guy shooting the big ass 100 yard groups at the range say “ good enough for hunting” , “all I need to do is hit a pie plate” followed by “ I am 2” high at 100 so I am on for 300 yards”. Makes we wonder if these guys understand that the pie plate needs to be 32” at 400y, before you factor in adrenaline, wind, optical or distance variables. These are often the same guys saying you need a duplex for hunting of SFP is better than FFP and that brakes are bad for hunting..

I am not saying that all guys not using a break fit into the above, but you need to sort out the information. I hunt with and without brakes. If I am probably going to jump an single animal it really doesn’t mater. But if I am shooting of a tripod or might want to make a second shot on another pig quickly a brake is a huge advantage, just like it is when I shoot a match.

To answer the OPs question, I like the Insite Arms Brake. It is lighter then APA and sidewinders with a bit less back pressure that I use on my match guns and just about as effective.

Proof barrel and elite carbon fill lighten up the build but it shoots and feels like my match gun. Carbon bipod is 5oz.

This pig was taken by my son on a full run, I think about 400y off a tripod by my son. He stoned it, and saw the impact-

For what it worth, my Son is in collage and living in my house in Laramie. He and his roommates (I was not there) got a 300” Elk on opening day with a bow, a large Mulie the following weekend without a break, the third weekend was duck opener and 5 kids with shotguns that limited out with 30 ducks in 32 minutes. And last weekend on of them took their father out and got an Antelope.. Hell, somewhere in between, an Antelope committed suicide by running into the side of my Son’s truck. So ya, you don’t need a brake, or a rifle to hunt. But we have 3rd rifle in Colorado at at end of the month and I will have a brake on my magnum.

I believe he proved that it transferred more of the recoil into the stock and it absorbed more of the recoil so it was a lighter recoil to the shooter. Kind of like a barrel block being the best case for studying this

Most of what you said is completely opinion. Some of what I am going to say is as well. Most is not as its based on unbiased reality.

FFP is not better than SFP. They both have pros and cons and depending on use one could be better than the other and vise versa. A SFP duplex reticle is superior in many cases while disadvantaged in others.

While I agree that marksmanship should be worked on as paper plate groups if really that bad is too big unless shooting elk size game at 100 and in. That being said, 30/30 lever rifle that shoots 3” groups with corelokts at 100 yards is plenty good to kill deer within its means which would be 150 and in typically with that style of rifle. A 2” rifle would work well out to 350 which is beyond the distance that most hunters have any business shooting in field conditions. The 1 1/2” to 2” high at 100 yards depending on caliber is perfectly acceptable way to sight in a hunting rifle with a $200 leupold 3x9 that 98% of hunters have on their rifles. It makes shots to 250 point and shoot usually with hold half way between the back and killzone to 325 which is further than most guys shoot anyhow. Would these guys benefit from high dollar scopes and custom rifles. Nope. A shot three inches to the left of center is still a dead deer.

The vast majority of hunters do not have high dollar tactical scopes and custom rifles like most guys here. The members here are the minority by far. I wouldn’t want a new shooter/hunter to believe most of what you said and feel like he needs to spend $3,000 on a scope and rifle to shoot game at the typical distance shots are taken as a $275 combo setup from Wal-Mart would give the same results. Meat on the table. I am not discounting your opinions by any means considering that this is what this sight is all about.

I used a 375 h&h with a brake for one hunt and forgot my hearing protection. I have permanent hearing loss from two shots. My ears rang for five days afterward and I’ll regret it the rest of my life.

I hunt with and without brakes depending on the caliber and recoil but I’ll be damned if I ever will take a shot without ear pro unless there is absolutely no other option. I’ve shot enough in my younger years with non brakes rifles in the field that it has effected my hearing so my option is that it really doesn’t matter brake or no brake because you should have ear pro in.

3 things:

1. If you are going to brake a hunting rifle, get something as low concussion as possible. I like the Precision Armaments EFAB for that purpose; you lose some braking efficiency but it’s comparable to - and I’d say slightly better than - a bare muzzle as far as concussion is concerned.
2. The Moldex battleplugs with the snaps open do a great job of attenuating loud noises, while still letting you hear conversation/sticks breaking/bugles/etc.
3. Above all, if you use a muzzle brake, make sure your off-hand ear has a plug in it. With a right-handed rifle shooter, the pressure spike at the left ear is much harsher than the pressure spike at the right ear.

FYI my 599 Tikka shoots ragged holes for 3 rounds - nobody said you need Uber expensive to shoot well.

No need to get spun up on SFP but rather the entirety of the rhetoric used in combination by many people acting like they know best and can not shoot a group. Sure my 30-30 is a fine gun, but I am not going to shoot the same 600 yard shot as I will on my long range hunter.

I see the same crap with bows. A guy shooting a recurve or whatever, with 12” groups at 20 yards. Then saying it’s great for hunting.. ok sure at 10 and maybe 20, but the logic does not hold up for further distances and under under pressure.

Sadly my Virtex bow shoots as well as some guys do at the range with a rifle.. here is an 80 yard target this week.

Don’t shoot shitty near range groups the pretend they are going to work for longer ranges... don’t listen to the people that do either..

Hunt with a Bow, shotgun whatever but be honest about the capabilities. Don’t get spun up because you don’t have what someone else uses and defend inferior shooting or something that works only for your distance when others are truely shooting further.

Wearing hearing protection is always paramount with or without brakes, that I always do. However, all these years, I used to wear only in ear plugs. But thinking of getting an over the head set, as the ear plugs only project the ear canals, its your ear bones that conduct the sound mostly, and concussion/sound can still reach your inner ears, and damage the sensitive nerves. That much I know from my career as an AF pilot flying jets

My 3M Peltors are too bulky and would affect the cheek weld. Will look for some slimmer options.

The military hearing testing is very generous to put it in a good way. Even half deaf guys pass with flying colors with less than 20dB hearing loss. The same when they got checked up outside were highly recommended hearing aids to even hear normal conversations.

It helps when you just click the button during the test as well. Since I've started shooting more I've definitely noticed a degradation in my hearing. Would love to use a can but they're illegal in Cali

Is a brake with a blast shield an option? Take away some of the refill but direct the blast away from you.

I hunt hogs on my ranch with a thermal at night, where quite often I'll find myself taking multiple shots at running pigs. I use a 6.8 with a single chamber .30 cal brake on it, and it really helps to keep the rifle down while I'm engaging multiple running targets. *I don't use a suppressor because I want my lowlife poaching neighbors to know that I'm out at night with a thermal*.

I started using electronic muffs, and I'll never go back. You can even wear them above the ears and slide them down in a second if the continual use starts to annoy.

Pinpointing the direction of sound is less accurate, but a good set of electronic muffs will pick up noises that you would have missed otherwise. I especially like how they tell on me when my stalk is too noisy.

Agreed on the electronic muffs. I have a pair of MSA Sordin Xs. They aren't cheap but after a few minutes you forget you're wearing them. They have independent circuitry for each ear so I find their directional ability to be very good.

I've been shooting since I could pee standing up, spent time in the Army as an 11C, then spent a decade as a rough framer. Like a jackass I didn't start taking hearing pro seriously till about 4 years ago.

I have to sleep with a fan on at night to drown out the ringing in my ears. The only good part is with all the ringing I never feel alone .

Hearing damage from a shot or two w/o protection is greatly ( as in one shot can do very real damage) increased with any brake, barrel porting, etc.
not only for the shooter but any people or animals nearby.

Yikes-- one shot without a break is to loud ..

Some of you guys thing a brake at the shooters location is somehow horrific and an unbraked rifle is fine are maybe nut really looking at the full picture.

Yes, brakes do increase the sound signature, some more than other. Flat baffled brakes less, shorter 16 and 20" barrels more..

2-8db increase is nothing to disregard, I get that, but lets accept we should wear ear-pro with all rifles.. even some suppressed.

I read a test somewhere with a short 20" barrel. 5' to the side a 308 was around 163db without a brake with the flat baffled brakes about 165db. 5' behind the rifle but off to the side a bit more in the blast channel of the brakes, it was around 151db and 158db for the flat baffles.. All too high.. brake or not.

As mentioned earlier I hunt with a brake and with out but use electronic-ear pro. My hunting brakes use a flat primary baffle kinda like the badgers..

That said for my match gun I use a 419 Hell-fire or an APA.. These are probably another +4-5db over the flat baffled brakes at the shooter..

Yeah, both situations are bad when compared to having proper hearing protections but a bare muzzle only hurts for like a minute after the shot. A shot with a brake leaves my head pounding for the rest of the day.

Thats why I went to the area 419 system from the asr muzzle brakes. If for some dumb reason I forget my silencer on a trip at least I dont have to worry about accommodating that fucking brake ruining my mood.

You could be movie script writer. That being said, hearing protection is paramount. I too was brash in very early Air Force days. Dont' take the risk of blowing out my ear drums any more.

If using a brake affords one the ability to have enhanced weapons control, the question then becomes ...."At what cost". Not cost as in $$$$ but what "negative".

Plenty of people here are giving the negative of higher db to the shooter. Well is +5db really THAT bad?? If it was +100db then sure that's horrible. If I could follow up shots much cleaner (due to better weapons control) with a +5db noise increase....I might be willing to "pay that price" of higher db. Just use hearing protection.

Given the extent of some people's self described hearing loss.....can you honestly and 100% accurately be tested to show you can even detect a +5db change in a sound??

Yes, as all others above...plenty of my time in the military, the clubs, shooting weapons....all have weighed on my ears.

I use electronic protection now and over the past years. In the stand damn squirrels and birds sound like thrashing deer. LOL They work, some better than others.....but they work.

If one shoots with a brake while using hearing protection......what's the problem?????????
