Qstn regarding priming .338 carterages

Hello, I'm a new member. I used to reload pistols back in the day, however, I have a big bore rifle coming which I would like to reload for.

I have some SMG 300s, some Lapua brass on the way, H1000 (all based on what I've read here)

I will use Federal 215 Primers.

I'm going to get an RCBS press and some Redding dies.

My qstn is, when I used to hand load for pistols, I used a hand priming tool.

My understanding is that with the rifle (.338 mag) precision is very important to print tight groups. So my qstn is, is a hand priming tool as good as any other method? Is there a "best practice" for priming this big bore mag rifle carterage?

Thanks very much, I appreciate any feedback. Safety is my primary goal. However, I'm also interested in accuracy and consistency.

Robby.

Chances are the .338 Lapua won't fit in your hand primer. It didn't in mine(Lee). I ended up getting a rcbs automatic priming system for around $90.

I use hand primers all the time for my .338 LM as well as other smaller cals. They work fine and give you an excellent feel for accurate loading. You need to keep an eye on the handles though as they don't always hold up to the task. The RCBS primer tool died early and won't seat the primers all the way. It lasted for about 500rds and is now relegated to little stuff. On the other hand, the cheap ass crappy Lee auto prime tool has been going for about 2000rds now. You need to check and make sure all primers are fully seated just in case but its been doing the job well.

Works fine in my lee ergo prime. Use the 416 rigby shell holder and take a dremel to the ridge to open it up a tad. Helps the cases to slide in n out easier

I have the older version of the Lee hand priming tool, and had to perform a similar modification to accept the 338LM cases. Took all of a couple minutes.
