Gunsmithing question on mcree chassis fit and finish

Whats the good word,

I picked up a mcree G5 TMAG Model 3, Standard Carbine Fixed Rifle Stock (RAW).

I got it raw due to having alumahyde 2 on hand matte black and I also have some devcon putty as well.

I have 2 questions:

Skim bedding or just recoil lug or not at all?

Since it is not anodized will the aluminum heat up to the point of causing stringing or warping of stock?

I haven't bedded any mcrees anywhere and the guns usually produce groups better then most can shoot. My guns are usually .2-.5 Moa guns. Where is there going to be heat that can cause stringing? The entire chassis is stress free system. If you're talking about ambient temp rise causing shift, never seen it. There's no way the rifle being fired is going to get hot enough to do anything to the chassis. If I bedded anything on one it would be the lug.

Aluminum is often used as heat sync's in computers. You barrel will over heat and cause stringing long before the Aluminum chassis.

Thank you for the replies I greatly appreciate it. The members here always give solid answers great forum. I am just learning and setting up my first real rig to try my hand at some local comps if I can find any in the NY tri state area and want my gear as good as it can be.

The main reason for the anodize process is to actually add a layer of protection to the alu. W/O this hard coat on it, if you bump it, scrape it, or hit other hard objects, chances are you will leave gouges, scratches, burrs, etc. to the metal. I wasn't aware of any benefits/concerns when it comes to heat.

While researching here on the hide the mcree chassis, I came across a thread where a member was stating heat benefits from anodizing aluminum.

Honestly, I'm rough on equipment, so in my HO, it's worth having the annodize on all alu, regardless of the heat issue. If i didn't have the annodize on my McCree, I'd have to carry a file with me to file all the burrs, nicks, sharp edges away.

You live and learn hopefully I don't bang it around to much, this shit gets expensive so I hope I didn't screw myself by trying to save a few bucks. Hopefully this epoxy base paint will protect it some what not as good as anodizing but it is what it is. I cant see paying $120 now after the fact for something I could of got for $50 done at mcree. My main concern was the heat issue but it seems I am gtg and it isn't a concern.

McRees Stocks are Ceracoated at McRees by Scott, they are not Anodized. I got 2 last year and that's the way they are. Hope this helps.

Its does didn't know that so I am good with the alumahyde 2 for now. Perfect

I purchased mine from Scott anodized, I like it that way and can't bring myself to Cerakote it.

I had one in raw aluminum, called it the silver bullet. I picked up some krylon, and painted it. It shot several comps, and if the paint wore off, I just sprayed it again. $15 worth of flat paint is much cheaper than cerakote, but it's all personal preference.

I have it all prep for paint just waiting til monday to hit it with alumahyde 2 matte black. I couldn't help myself and I skim bedded it with devcon last night it had a nice fit but a lot of play in recoil lug and I figured f☆☆k it if I'm doing the lug lay a nice skim so it has solid contact. Came out great imo.

This is my finished rebuild above kept action and everything else was replaced^^^^

On bottom was the original build but it was way to heavy with the choate stock and Mcgowen 26" bull barrel

Well got mine mounted up. Shots are off my phone and it was late so I wasn't to focused on quality. I did move the sling back too I now see why everyone uses the rear flash cup on these Funny my savage looks a bit like yours did before the change. It is a bit heavy the choate is a great stock but needs to go on a diet

I just finished RE-loadevelopment yesterday after a powder lot change and a drastic change is FPS. My third load shot a .63" group at 200yds. Called it good and went home. Do you think it needs to be bedded?

No it don't but as you know it don't hurt and if you got the time and the Devon why not. I personally don't like the space in the lug area and the sides so I skim bedded my chassis. Anyway good shooting and Merry Christmas
