I have an 18" Vudoo, and the MDT chassis requires me to have a 20" barrel to clear my chassis. I want the extra length of the chassis to put weights forward a bit and was wondering what the downside would be to running the barrel before the end of the chassis.

Will the hot gases/carbon coming out of the barrel just end up damaging my chassis?

I was looking at maybe getting some sort of 2-4" bloop tube if they make something like that to thread onto muzzle to clear it.

I wondered the same thing with my bergara in the acc, I would think it may dirty the inside of the chassis some but cant imagine it damaging anything.

The bullet is only flying roughly 2" before it clears the chassis. Unless you use a brake I would bet itll only dirty the end of acc where it comes back up to make the end of the barrel channel.

May set the bergara up and try it out next time I go to the range.....

I had a long post typed out about how you are maybe just a little tiny bit overly obsessed with weight. But you know what, it's your rifle to do with as you please. Some guys like em big. :D (dont take this as personal, not an attack on you)

22LR does not generating the amount of gas volume or heat to damage your chassis, this isn't .556 or larger where I have seen a short barrel ending under the hand guard actually damage the aluminum structure. Worst that is going to happen is a carbon residue mess. I get that on the inside of my barrel tuners, easy enough to clean out. A screw on muzzle device of some sort will alleviate this. I use a barrel diameter , 2.5" long brass thread protector on my 18" anschutz silo rifle with a .350 bore to give a little better balance to the front and protect the threads. I clean the carbon out of it once a season. In fact a piece of 1.5" roundstock 1/2-28 threaded brass in your barrel diameter couple inches long would give you that desired weight where you want it

IF I ever get around to running a 22 PRS/NRL style match I'm going to have a couple offhand stages to balance out the "tons of weight is better" crowd. Better yet would be a 100-200 yard jog with the rifle to the firing line but I just cant see that going well with the board of directors on a square range. Trying to keep it in the spirit of what would actually be carried in the field for hunting and practicality.

I have a 20" barrel on my Vudoo and it only cleared the chassis by an inch or so, which wasn't enough to attach my Magnetospeed.

I bought a fake suppressor from Gemtech, which fixed my problem, and ultimately, would fix yours also.

In the end, I switched to a Foundation Centurion and now I have plenty of clearance.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I was going to drop weight by having a longer fore-end, because moving the weights I have which are more center in my chassis, will now be further out. I should be able to reduce my current Vudoo by 1lb by moving the current weight out by 4" and dropping a 1lb of weight that's more towards the center. I want to run my rifle around 16lbs fully loaded - scope + bipod.

That little 2.5" long brass thread protector, where did you get it? That sounds perfect.., would love to find one that is < 1.2" in diameter to clear my chassis. I think my chassis allows for 1.25" barrels, so I'd want the brass thread protector to just be the same diameter as my barrel.

    Thanks!

I roll my own, what exact diameter and how long do you want it? I’ll see what type of scrap I have laying around in the brass bin. You pay shipping. See thread protector on this 1712 that weighs in at a portly 8lb 6 oz all in.

I had the same issue as you. After a few of our PM's back and forth a while ago I also went with an ACC but put the mirage hood or whatever they call it on the top. Mine hasn't had any issues and shoots great.

I have a mirage shield coming in and a full length ACC to run with a little bloop tube hoping it won't affect my harmonics and open up my groups. We'll see how it shoots. Otherwise maybe I'll just put some tape on the inside of the chassis that I can pull off to help with the cleaning. I'll get a new 20" MTU Vudoo in a few months from now.
